# Telegonus

**Telegonus** (/təˈlɛɡənəs/; [Ancient Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek): Τηλέγονος means "born afar") is the name shared by three different characters in [Greek mythology](/source/Greek_mythology).

- Telegonus, a king of [Egypt](/source/Egypt) who was sometimes said to have married the [nymph](/source/Nymph) [Io](/source/Io_(mythology)).[1]
- Telegonus, a [Thracian](/source/Thracians) son of [Proteus](/source/Proteus)[2] by [Torone](/source/Torone_(mythology)) ([Chrysonoe](/source/Torone_(mythology))) of [Phlegra](/source/Phlegra_(mythology)),[3] daughter of King [Cleitus](/source/Cleitus_(mythology)) of [Sithones](/source/Sithones).[4] He was the brother of [Polygonus](/source/Polygonus_(mythology)) ([Tmolus](/source/Tmolus_(father_of_Tantalus))[5]). Because of Telegonus' and his brother's great violence towards strangers, Proteus prayed to their grandsire Poseidon to carry him back to [Egypt](/source/Ancient_Egypt). They met their demise when they challenged [Heracles](/source/Heracles) to wrestle at the behest of [Hera](/source/Hera) but lost their life in the battle.[6]
