Ancient Egyptian nomarch

Tefibi (Itj-ibj) Nomarch of the 13th nome of Upper Egypt Drawing of a wall of Tefibi's tomb Predecessor Khety I Successor Khety II Dynasty 10th Dynasty Pharaoh Wahkare Khety and Merykare Burial Asyut, tomb III Father Khety Children Khety

**Tefibi** (or **Itj-ibj** – *It(.i)ib(.i)*[1] – in a more modern reading) was an [ancient Egyptian](/source/Ancient_Egypt) [nomarch](/source/Nomarch) of the 13th *[nome](/source/Nome_(Egypt))* of [Upper Egypt](/source/Upper_Egypt) (*"the Upper [Sycamore](/source/Ficus_sycomorus)"*) during the [10th Dynasty](/source/Tenth_Dynasty_of_Egypt) (c. 21st century BCE, during the [First Intermediate Period](/source/First_Intermediate_Period)). In addition, he also was *hereditary prince, count, wearer of the royal seal, sole companion* and *high priest of [Wepwawet](/source/Wepwawet)*. The main source about his life came from his biography, inscribed on the "tomb III" in [Asyut](/source/Asyut).[2]

It is generally assumed that Tefibi was the second of a trio of related nomarchs datable to the [Herakleopolite](/source/Heracleopolis_Magna) period; he was likely preceded by his father Khety and followed by his son, also named [Khety](/source/Khety_II_(nomarch)).[1]

## Biography

He was member of a long line of nomarchs in Asyut with strong bonds of loyalty and friendship towards the [Herakleopolite](/source/Heracleopolis_Magna) dynasty, and seems that he continued the policy of good governance pursued by his father [Khety I](/source/Khety_I_(nomarch)): in fact, Tefibi praised the safety and the respect of the laws in his *nomos*.[3] When [the Thebans](/source/11th_Dynasty_of_Egypt) extended their influences on [Thinis](/source/Thinis) and [Abydos](/source/Abydos%2C_Egypt), the Herakleopolite [pharaoh](/source/Pharaoh) (who is generally believed to be [Wahkare Khety](/source/Wahkare_Khety)) and Tefibi rallied their troops, and swiftly regained Thinis. Their undisciplined soldiers sacked the sacred [necropolis](/source/Necropolis), as reported by the king himself in the *[Teaching for King Merykare](/source/Teaching_for_King_Merykare)*.[4]

Tefibi died during the reign of king [Merikare](/source/Merikare), who installed [Khety II](/source/Khety_II_(nomarch)), son of the deceased, as nomarch in Asyut.
