**Teddy Weatherford** (October 11, 1903 − April 25, 1945) was an [American](/source/Americans) [jazz](/source/Jazz) pianist and an accomplished [stride pianist](/source/Stride_pianist).[1]

## Biography

Weatherford was born in [Pocahontas, Virginia](/source/Pocahontas%2C_Virginia),[2] and was raised in neighboring [Bluefield, West Virginia](/source/Bluefield%2C_West_Virginia). From 1915 through 1920, he lived in [New Orleans, Louisiana](/source/New_Orleans%2C_Louisiana), where he learned to play jazz piano.[3] He then moved to [Chicago, Illinois](/source/Chicago%2C_Illinois), in 1922[2] where he worked with such bands as that of [Erskine Tate](/source/Erskine_Tate)[3] through the 1920s and with such jazz notables as [Louis Armstrong](/source/Louis_Armstrong) and [Johnny Dodds](/source/Johnny_Dodds) and impressed the young [Earl Hines](/source/Earl_Hines).

Weatherford then traveled, first to [Amsterdam](/source/Amsterdam), then around [Asia](/source/Asia) playing professionally. In the early 1930s, he led a band at the Taj Mahal Hotel in [Bombay](/source/Bombay) (now [Mumbai](/source/Mumbai)), India.[4] He joined [Crickett Smith](/source/Crickett_Smith)'s band in [Jakarta](/source/Jakarta), Indonesia. Weatherford took over leadership of Smith's band in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) in 1937.

During World War II, he led a band in [Calcutta](/source/Calcutta),[5] where he made [radio](/source/Radio) broadcasts for the [U. S. Armed Forces Radio Service](/source/American_Forces_Network). Performers with Weatherford's band included [Bridget Althea Moe](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bridget_Althea_Moe&action=edit&redlink=1),[6] [Jimmy Witherspoon](/source/Jimmy_Witherspoon), Roy Butler, [Gery Scott](/source/Gery_Scott) and [Cedric West](/source/Cedric_West).

Teddy Weatherford died of [cholera](/source/Cholera) in Calcutta, aged 41.[3]
