Jessup is a direct descendant of the puritan John Jessup, a founder of [Southampton, Long Island](/source/Southampton%2C_Long_Island), and also of [Henry Harris Jessup](/source/Henry_Harris_Jessup), the missionary and co-founder of the [American University of Beirut](/source/American_University_of_Beirut). He is a nephew of [Philip Jessup](/source/Philip_Jessup) the noted diplomat, jurist and scholar.
