Active from 1950 to 1992, he was the production designer or art director on more than 50 feature films. He won an [Academy Award](/source/Academy_Awards) for [Best Art Direction](/source/Academy_Award_for_Best_Production_Design) for *[Sayonara](/source/Sayonara)* (1957) and was nominated for the same award for five other films: *[Marty](/source/Marty_(film))* (1955), *[Some Like It Hot](/source/Some_Like_It_Hot)* (1959), *[Pepe](/source/Pepe_(1960_film))* (1960), *[The Longest Day](/source/The_Longest_Day_(film))* (1962), and *[What a Way to Go!](/source/What_a_Way_to_Go!)* (1964).

## Early years

Haworth was born in [Cleveland](/source/Cleveland) in 1917 and grew up in the suburb of [Willoughby, Ohio](/source/Willoughby%2C_Ohio).[1] His father, William, was a playwright and theatrical producer.[2] He attended the [University of Southern California](/source/University_of_Southern_California).[1]

## Art direction

Haworth began working in the motion picture business as an illustrator, set designer, and assistant art director at Warner Brothers.[1][2] His first screen credit as art director was in 1951 on [Alfred Hitchcock](/source/Alfred_Hitchcock)'s *[Strangers on a Train](/source/Strangers_on_a_Train_(film))*.[1]

He earned his first Academy Award nomination for art direction on *[Marty](/source/Marty_(film))* (1955). His work on *Marty* has been described as "an extraordinary example of the monochrome world".[1] He won the Oscar for art direction two year later for his work on *[Sayonara](/source/Sayonara)* (1957).[3] Writing in *The New York Times*, [Bosley Crowther](/source/Bosley_Crowther) touted Haworth's work on *Sayonara* as "handsome Japanese surroundings—outdoor gardens, graceful, sliding-paneled homes and delicate teahouses, shown in colors of exceptional taste and blend."[1]

He was also nominated for the same award for his work on *[Some Like It Hot](/source/Some_Like_It_Hot)* (1959), *[Pepe](/source/Pepe_(1960_film))* (1960), *[The Longest Day](/source/The_Longest_Day_(film))* (1962), and *[What a Way to Go!](/source/What_a_Way_to_Go!)* (1964). His other notable works include *[Friendly Persuasion](/source/Friendly_Persuasion_(1956_film))* (1956), *[Invasion of the Body Snatchers](/source/Invasion_of_the_Body_Snatchers)* (1956), *[Ride the Wild Surf](/source/Ride_the_Wild_Surf)* (1964), *[The Beguiled](/source/The_Beguiled_(1971_film))* (1971), *[Jeremiah Johnson](/source/Jeremiah_Johnson_(film))* (1972), and *[The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea](/source/The_Sailor_Who_Fell_from_Grace_with_the_Sea_(film))* (1976).[1]

## Personal life and later years

Haworth had three marriages, to Miriam Severy, Hallie Stagner, and Anna Wackevitch. All three marriages ended in divorce.[4] He had four children: production designer [Sean Haworth](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sean_Haworth&action=edit&redlink=1), pop artist [Jann Haworth](/source/Jann_Haworth), and daughters Maria and Holly.[2]

From 1973 until his death in 1993, Haworth lived in [Sundance, Utah](/source/Sundance%2C_Utah).[1] He was in an automobile accident in December 1992 and developed a blood clot in his brain. He died three months later in February 1993, at age 75.[4][5]

He was posthumously inducted into the [Art Directors Guild Hall of Fame](/source/Art_Directors_Guild_Hall_of_Fame) in 2009.[6]
