**Edward Calland** (15 June 1932 – 25 May 1995) was an English professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as a [centre-forward](/source/Forward_(association_football)). He scored 76 goals in 171 league games in a ten-year career in the [Football League](/source/English_Football_League) with [Fulham](/source/Fulham_F.C.), [Torquay United](/source/Torquay_United_F.C.), [Exeter City](/source/Exeter_City_F.C.), [Port Vale](/source/Port_Vale_F.C.), and [Lincoln City](/source/Lincoln_City_F.C.).[2] His brothers [Ralph](/source/Ralph_Calland) and [Albert](/source/Albert_Calland_(footballer)) also played professional football.

## Career

Calland joined [Bill Dodgin](/source/Bill_Dodgin,_Sr.)'s [Fulham](/source/Fulham_F.C.) in April 1952 from [Northern League](/source/Northern_Football_League) club [Durham City](/source/Durham_City_A.F.C.). He was unable to break into the Fulham first-team and left [Craven Cottage](/source/Craven_Cottage) in September 1952, joining [Torquay United](/source/Torquay_United_F.C.) on a [free transfer](/source/Free_transfer_(association_football)), linking up with his older brothers [Ralph](/source/Ralph_Calland) and [Albert](/source/Albert_Calland_(footballer)).[3] His league debut came in the [1952–53](/source/1952%E2%80%9353_Football_League) season, and although not a first-team regular he managed to score 21 goals in 47 [Third Division South](/source/Football_League_Third_Division_South) games for [Eric Webber](/source/Eric_Webber)'s "Gulls". The [Plainmoor](/source/Plainmoor) side finished in mid-table in [1952–53](/source/1952%E2%80%9353_Football_League), [1953–54](/source/1953%E2%80%9354_Football_League), [1954–55](/source/1954%E2%80%9355_Football_League) and [1955–56](/source/1955%E2%80%9356_Football_League), before finishing in second place in [1956–57](/source/1956%E2%80%9357_Football_League) – behind champions [Ipswich Town](/source/Ipswich_Town_F.C.) on goal average.

In July 1957, he moved to league rivals [Exeter City](/source/Exeter_City_F.C.) for a fee of £1,500.[3] He scored 15 league goals as the "Grecians" finished bottom of the league in [1957–58](/source/1957%E2%80%9358_Football_League) before they replaced [manager](/source/Manager_(association_football)) [Bill Thompson](/source/Bill_Thompson_(Scottish_footballer)) with [Frank Broome](/source/Frank_Broome). Exeter finished just one point outside the (newly created) [Fourth Division](/source/Football_League_Fourth_Division) [promotion](/source/Promotion_and_relegation) places in [1958–59](/source/1958%E2%80%9359_Football_League), with Calland top-scoring with 27 goals in 47 league games.[3] City then dropped down to ninth place in [1959–60](/source/1959%E2%80%9360_Football_League) as he could only add a further seven goals to his tally.[3] He was [transfer](/source/Transfer_(association_football))-listed in January 1960.[3] Calland scored 49 goals in 105 league games at [St James Park](/source/St_James_Park_(Exeter)).[3]

He left Exeter in August 1960 on a free transfer, joining [Norman Low](/source/Norman_Low)'s [Port Vale](/source/Port_Vale_F.C.).[1] Nicknamed "Cheyenne" by supporters, he scored three goals in 12 [Third Division](/source/Football_League_Third_Division) games in the [1960–61](/source/1960%E2%80%9361_Port_Vale_F.C._season) season as he lost his first-team spot after just a month.[1] He left [Vale Park](/source/Vale_Park) on a free transfer to [Lincoln City](/source/Lincoln_City_F.C.) in July 1961.[1] He scored three times in seven Third Division games for [Bill Anderson](/source/Bill_Anderson_(English_footballer))'s "Imps" in [1961–62](/source/1961%E2%80%9362_Football_League), and left [Sincil Bank](/source/Sincil_Bank) and later played for [Southern League](/source/Southern_Football_League) side [Cheltenham Town](/source/Cheltenham_Town_F.C.).[3]

## Style of play

Calland was a [centre-forward](/source/Forward_(association_football)) with a powerful [shot](/source/Shooting_(association_football)).[3]

## Later life

After retirement Calland returned to [Torquay](/source/Torquay) and ran the Torbay Cab Company.[3] He died in May 1995 after a long illness.[3]
