**Tecuci** (Romanian pronunciation: [\[teˈkutʃʲ\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Romanian)) is a [city](/source/Municipiu) in [Galați County](/source/Gala%C8%9Bi_County), [Romania](/source/Romania), in the historical region of [Western Moldavia](/source/Western_Moldavia). It is situated among wooded hills, on the right bank of the [Bârlad River](/source/B%C3%A2rlad_(river)), and at the junction of railways from [Galați](/source/Gala%C8%9Bi), [Bârlad](/source/B%C3%A2rlad), and [Mărășești](/source/M%C4%83r%C4%83%C8%99e%C8%99ti).

## History

The area neighboring Tecuci was the scene of a fierce battle in 1476 between [Moldavian Prince](/source/List_of_rulers_of_Moldavia) [Stephen the Great](/source/Stephen_III_of_Moldavia) and the [Ottomans](/source/Ottoman_Empire).[3]

Under the [Kingdom of Romania](/source/Kingdom_of_Romania), it was the residence of the now-defunct [Tecuci County](/source/Tecuci_County).[3]

## Economy

The city was famous[*[when?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Dates_and_numbers#Chronological_items)*] for its canned food factories, which preserve vegetables, fruit and meat, as well as for its [mustard](/source/Mustard_(condiment)) factories.

As of the [2011 census](/source/2011_Romanian_census), there were 34,871 inhabitants who lived within the city limits, of which 83.2% were [Romanians](/source/Romanians) and 4.3% [Roma](/source/Romani_people_in_Romania).[5] At the [2021 census](/source/2021_Romanian_census), Tecuci had a population of 32,801; of those, 74.17% were Romanians and 3.69% Roma.[6]
