**Te Rerenga** is a locality on the [Whangapoua Harbour](/source/Whangapoua_Harbour), [Coromandel Peninsula](/source/Coromandel_Peninsula), [New Zealand](/source/New_Zealand). [State Highway 25](/source/State_Highway_25_(New_Zealand)) runs through it. [Coromandel](/source/Coromandel%2C_New_Zealand) is 12 km to the west. [Whitianga](/source/Whitianga) lies to the south east. The Waitekuri and Opitonui Rivers flow from the [Coromandel Range](/source/Coromandel_Range) in the west and south through the area to drain in the Whangapoua Harbour.[4][5]

## Demographics

Mercury Bay North statistical area covers the northeastern Coromandel from just north of [Coroglen](/source/Coroglen) to [New Chums Beach](/source/New_Chums_Beach), but excludes [Whitianga](/source/Whitianga). It has an area of 305.27 km2 (117.87 sq mi)[6] and had an estimated population of 2,150 as of June 2025,[7] with a population density of 7.0 people per km2.

Mercury Bay North had a population of 2,079 in the [2023 New Zealand census](/source/2023_New_Zealand_census), an increase of 468 people (29.1%) since the [2018 census](/source/2018_New_Zealand_census), and an increase of 762 people (57.9%) since the [2013 census](/source/2013_New_Zealand_census). There were 1,056 males, 1,014 females and 9 people of [other genders](/source/Non-binary_gender) in 885 dwellings.[10] 2.0% of people identified as [LGBTIQ+](/source/LGBTQ). The median age was 52.8 years (compared with 38.1 years nationally). There were 315 people (15.2%) aged under 15 years, 210 (10.1%) aged 15 to 29, 966 (46.5%) aged 30 to 64, and 588 (28.3%) aged 65 or older.[9]

People could identify as more than one ethnicity. The results were 93.8% [European](/source/European_New_Zealanders) ([Pākehā](/source/P%C4%81keh%C4%81)); 13.0% [Māori](/source/M%C4%81ori_people); 1.7% [Pasifika](/source/Pasifika_New_Zealanders); 1.9% [Asian](/source/Asian_New_Zealanders); 0.4% Middle Eastern, Latin American and African New Zealanders (MELAA); and 3.6% other, which includes people giving their ethnicity as "New Zealander". English was spoken by 98.4%, Māori language by 2.3%, Samoan by 0.3%, and other languages by 6.5%. No language could be spoken by 1.4% (e.g. too young to talk). [New Zealand Sign Language](/source/New_Zealand_Sign_Language) was known by 0.3%. The percentage of people born overseas was 18.3, compared with 28.8% nationally.[9]

Religious affiliations were 23.7% [Christian](/source/Christianity_in_New_Zealand), 0.1% [Hindu](/source/Hinduism_in_New_Zealand), 0.3% [Islam](/source/Islam_in_New_Zealand), 0.6% [Buddhist](/source/Buddhism_in_New_Zealand), 1.0% [New Age](/source/New_Age), 0.1% [Jewish](/source/Judaism_in_New_Zealand), and 1.2% other religions. People who answered that they had [no religion](/source/Irreligion_in_New_Zealand) were 65.7%, and 7.4% of people did not answer the census question.[9]

Of those at least 15 years old, 378 (21.4%) people had a bachelor's or higher degree, 1,029 (58.3%) had a post-high school certificate or diploma, and 363 (20.6%) people exclusively held high school qualifications. The median income was $28,900, compared with $41,500 nationally. 129 people (7.3%) earned over $100,000 compared to 12.1% nationally. The employment status of those at least 15 was that 657 (37.2%) people were employed full-time, 339 (19.2%) were part-time, and 39 (2.2%) were unemployed.[9]

## Education

Te Rerenga School is a coeducational full primary (years 1–8) school with a roll of 111 students as of March 2026.[11][12] The school celebrated its centennial in 2008.[13]
