# Taxoid

**Taxoid**s are a class of derivatives from taxol,[1] that is, [paclitaxel](/source/Paclitaxel). They were developed for their anticancer [chemotherapeutic](/source/Chemotherapy) properties. Taxoids are usually treated as [synonymous](/source/Synonym) with [taxanes](/source/Taxane); for example, a major medical dictionary defines the two terms with the same definition phrasing,[2] and in another the phrasing varies slightly but conveys nearly identical meaning.[3]

Taxoids are chemically [taxane](/source/Taxane)-derived [diterpenoids](/source/Diterpenoid), which do occur in nature, in the genera *[Taxus](/source/Taxus)* and *[Austrotaxus](/source/Austrotaxus)* of [yew trees](/source/Yew_tree).[4] The taxoids class and the taxanes class both include paclitaxel (trade names Taxol, Abraxane, Onxol, Nov-Onxol) and [docetaxel](/source/Docetaxel) (trade names Taxotere, Docecad).
