The '''Tanzilla River''' is a [tributary](/source/tributary) of the [Stikine River](/source/Stikine_River) in northwest part of the [province](/source/Provinces_and_territories_of_Canada) of [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia), [Canada](/source/Canada).<ref name=bcgnis>{{BCGNIS|17641|Tanzilla River}}</ref>

From its [source](/source/river_source) in the [Three Sisters Range](/source/Three_Sisters_Range) the Tanzilla River flows roughly north and northwest to the vicinity of the community of [Dease Lake](/source/Dease_Lake), then turns west and southwest, flowing to the Stikine River in the [Grand Canyon of the Stikine](/source/Grand_Canyon_of_the_Stikine). The river's total length is roughly {{convert|140|km|mi|abbr=on}}.<ref name=length>Length measured using BCGNIS coordinates, topographic maps, and [https://atlas.gc.ca/toporama/en/index.html Toporama]</ref> The Tanzilla River's mean annual [discharge](/source/Discharge_(hydrology)) is estimated at {{convert|16.0|m3/s|cuft/s|abbr=on}}.<ref name=watertool>{{cite web |url= https://nwwt.bcwatertool.ca |title= Northwest Water Tool |work= BC Water Tool |publisher= GeoBC, Integrated Land Management Bureau, Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, Government of British Columbia |accessdate= 25 October 2023}}</ref> Its [watershed](/source/drainage_basin) covers {{convert|1833|km2|abbr=on}}.<ref name=watertool/> The watershed's [land cover](/source/land_cover) is classified as 28.8% [conifer forest](/source/Conifer), 27.3% [shrubland](/source/shrubland), 24.4% [mixed forest](/source/Mixed_coniferous_forest), 11.7% [barren](/source/Barren_vegetation), 5.2% [herbaceous](/source/Herbaceous_plant), and small amounts of other cover.<ref name=watertool/>

The mouth of the Tanzilla River is located about {{convert|40|km|abbr=on}} northeast of the community of [Telegraph Creek](/source/Telegraph_Creek), British Columbia, about {{convert|53|km|abbr=on}} southwest of [Dease Lake](/source/Dease_Lake), British Columbia, and about {{convert|220|km|abbr=on}} east of [Juneau, Alaska](/source/Juneau%2C_Alaska).

The Tanzilla River's watershed is within the traditional territory of the [Tahltan First Nation](/source/Tahltan_First_Nation), of the [Tahltan](/source/Tahltan) people.<ref>{{cite web |url= https://tahltan.org/our-territory |title= Our Territory |publisher= Tahltan Central Government |accessdate= 25 October 2023}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url= https://tahltan.ca/nation/territory |title= Dah Ki Mi — "Our House" |publisher= Tahltan Band Council |accessdate= 25 October 2023}}</ref>

==Geography==
The Tanzilla River originates in the Three Sisters Range, whence it flows northwest toward the community of Dease Lake. It receives the waters of numerous unnamed tributaries and a few named ones. Gnat Creek joins from the south,<ref>{{BCGNIS|2590|Gnat Creek}}</ref> then Zuback Creek from the east,<ref>{{BCGNIS|25954|Zuback Creek}}</ref> Tsenaglode Creek from the southwest,<ref>{{BCGNIS|23853|senaglode Creek}}</ref> and Dalby Creek from the east,<ref>{{BCGNIS|7547|Dalby Creek}}</ref> before the Tanzilla River nears Dease Lake and turns to the southwest.<ref name=toporama/><ref name=mapbook/><ref name=topomap/><ref name=watertool/>

As the Tanzilla River nears Dease Lake its course is followed by the [Stewart–Cassiar Highway](/source/Stewart%E2%80%93Cassiar_Highway), which goes to Dease Lake and beyond to the [Yukon](/source/Yukon). Near Dease Lake the river flows by Tanzilla Butte and Tatsho Mountain.<ref>{{BCGNIS|17637|Tanzilla Butte}}</ref><ref>{{BCGNIS|18483|Tatsho Mountain}}</ref> After Dease Lake the Tanzilla River flows through wetlands in a meandering path, north of the [Hotailuh Range](/source/Hotailuh_Range).<ref>{{BCGNIS|18434|Hotailuh Range}}</ref> [Telegraph Creek Road](/source/Telegraph_Creek_Road), which connects the community of [Telegraph Creek](/source/Telegraph_Creek) to the Stewart-Cassiar Highway, follows the Tanzilla River from Dease Lake to the Stikine River. As the Tanzilla flows west and southwest toward the Stikine and through the [Tanzilla Plateau](/source/Tanzilla_Plateau), it receives many tributaries including Tatsho Creek,<ref>{{BCGNIS|18484|Tatsho Creek}}</ref> Sixteen Mile Creek,<ref>{{BCGNIS|37444|Sixteen Mile Creek}}</ref> Auguschidle Creek,<ref>{{BCGNIS|9855|Auguschidle Creek}}</ref> and Itsillitu Creek.<ref>{{BCGNIS|2408|Itsillitu Creek}}</ref><ref name=toporama/><ref name=mapbook/><ref name=topomap/><ref name=watertool/>

The lower Tanzilla River also flows by the Tahltan [Indian reserve](/source/Indian_reserve) "Tatcho Creek 11",<ref>{{BCGNIS|64813|Tatcho Creek 11}}</ref> near the mouth of Tatsho Creek.<ref>{{cite web |url= https://fnp-ppn.aadnc-aandc.gc.ca/FNP/Main/Search/RVDetail.aspx?RESERVE_NUMBER=07660&lang=eng |website= [Crown–Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada](/source/Crown%E2%80%93Indigenous_Relations_and_Northern_Affairs_Canada) |publisher= Government of Canada |title= Iskut 6 Indian Reserve |accessdate= 28 October 2023}}</ref> Near its mouth on the Stikine, the Tanzilla River passes by the locality of Cariboo Meadows,<ref>{{BCGNIS|11185|Cariboo Meadows}}</ref> then enters [Stikine River Provincial Park](/source/Stikine_River_Provincial_Park) before emptying into the Stikine River in the [Grand Canyon of the Stikine](/source/Grand_Canyon_of_the_Stikine), just east of the mouth of the [Tuya River](/source/Tuya_River).<ref name=toporama>{{cite web |url= http://atlas.gc.ca/toporama/en/index.html |title= Toporama (on-line map and search) |work= [Atlas of Canada](/source/Atlas_of_Canada) |publisher= [Natural Resources Canada](/source/Natural_Resources_Canada) |accessdate= 25 October 2023}}</ref><ref name=mapbook>{{cite book |last1= Mussio |first1= Russell |last2= Mussio |first2= Wesley |title= Northern BC Backroad Mapbook |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=pBAFEAAAQBAJ&pg=PA106 |accessdate= 25 October 2023 |date= 2018 |publisher= Mussio Ventures |isbn= 978-1-926806-87-7 |page= 96}}</ref><ref name=topomap>{{cite map|url=https://volcano.si.edu/maps/GVAlaskaCanada/G910509-005.jpg|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210502220141/https://volcano.si.edu/maps/GVAlaskaCanada/G910509-005.jpg|title=Dease Lake, Cassiar District, British Columbia|scale=1:250,000|series=A 502|map=104 J|edition=2|type=Topographic map|publisher=[Department of Energy, Mines and Resources](/source/Department_of_Energy%2C_Mines_and_Resources)|year=1977|language=en,fr|access-date=2023-10-22|archive-date=2021-05-02}}</ref>
