**Tangen Church** ([Norwegian](/source/Norwegian_language): *Tangen kirke*) is a [parish church](/source/Parish_church) of the [Church of Norway](/source/Church_of_Norway) in [Stange Municipality](/source/Stange_Municipality) in [Innlandet](/source/Innlandet) county, [Norway](/source/Norway). It is located in the village of [Tangen](/source/Tangen). It is one of the churches for the Tangen [parish](/source/Parish) which is part of the [Hamar domprosti](/source/Hamar_domprosti) ([deanery](/source/Deanery)) in the [Diocese of Hamar](/source/Diocese_of_Hamar). The white, wooden church was built in an [octagonal](/source/Churches_in_Norway#Floor_plan) design in 1861 using plans drawn up by the [architect](/source/Architect) [Christian Henrik Grosch](/source/Christian_Henrik_Grosch). The church seats about 450 people.[1][2]

## History

In 1837, Berte and Jon Grimerud donated land from the Tangen farm to the [Stange Church](/source/Stange_Church) parish. It took some time, but on 23 March 1857, the new Tangen parish was separated from the Stange parish. Plans for a new church on the donated land began soon afterwards. The church was designed by [Christian Heinrich Grosch](/source/Christian_Heinrich_Grosch) and the lead builder was Hans Gulbrandsen Røisi. The [nave](/source/Nave) is octagonal and [choir](/source/Choir_(architecture)) and [church porch](/source/Church_porch) are connected on opposite ends of the octagon. There are [sacristies](/source/Sacristies) in the extension of the choir. The middle part of the nave has a raised roof supported by eight columns. Grosch designed many octagonal churches in Norway, but this is the only one with a raised central part which is supposed to be influenced by [stave church](/source/Stave_church) architecture. Tangen church was [consecrated](/source/Consecrated) on 9 August 1861 by the local [Provost](/source/Provost_(religion)) [Paul Winsnes](/source/Paul_Vinsnes) (the husband of [Hanna Winsnes](/source/Hanna_Winsnes) who wrote a famous Norwegian cookbook).[3][4]
