The '''''Tamasaba''''' (玉サバ) or '''''Sabao''''' is an uncommon [Japan](/source/Japan)ese variety of [goldfish](/source/goldfish) with a body shape similar to a ''[Ryukin](/source/Ryukin)'' or a [Fantail](/source/Fantail_(goldfish)), but with a long, flowing, single tail that is similar to that of a [mackerel](/source/mackerel), hence its other name, [Mackerel](/source/Mackerel) Tail. This attractive and strong goldfish variety makes a very suitable [pond](/source/pond) fish and [aquarium](/source/aquarium) fish. Usually white and red tamasaba is rarely seen with other colors. It withstands the cold very well.

The ''Tamasaba'' originated from the [Yamagata Prefecture](/source/Yamagata_Prefecture) in northern [Japan](/source/Japan), hence it is also known as ''Yamagata Kingyō'' or Yamagata Goldfish.<ref>Johnson, Erik L., D.V.M. and Richard E.
