# Talmage, Kansas

**Talmage** is an [unincorporated community](/source/Unincorporated_area#United_States) and [census-designated place](/source/Census-designated_place) (CDP) in [Dickinson County, Kansas](/source/Dickinson_County,_Kansas), United States.[1] As of the [2020 census](/source/2020_United_States_census), the population was 78.[2]

## History

In 1887, the [Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway](/source/Atchison,_Topeka_and_Santa_Fe_Railway) (ATSF) built a branch line from [Neva](/source/Neva,_Kansas) (three miles west of [Strong City](/source/Strong_City,_Kansas)) through Talmage to [Superior, Nebraska](/source/Superior,_Nebraska). In 1996, the ATSF merged with the [Burlington Northern Railroad](/source/Burlington_Northern_Railroad), forming the current [BNSF Railway](/source/BNSF_Railway). Most locals still refer to this railroad as the "Santa Fe".

The [post office](/source/Post_office) was established on December 22, 1887.[3]

## Geography

Talmage is located in northwestern Dickinson County, just south of state highway [K-18](/source/K-18_(Kansas_highway)) in the valley of Mud Creek. Via K-18 and [K-15](/source/K-15_(Kansas_highway)), the [county seat](/source/County_seat) of [Abilene](/source/Abilene,_Kansas) is 11 miles (18 km) to the southeast. According to the [U.S. Census Bureau](/source/U.S._Census_Bureau), Talmage has an area of 0.10 sq mi (0.25 square kilometres), all land.[4]

## Education

The community is served by [Abilene USD 435](/source/Abilene_USD_435) public school district.
