**Tallarook** [/tæləˈrʊk/](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English)[3] is a town the [Shire of Mitchell](/source/Shire_of_Mitchell) [local government area](/source/Local_government_in_Australia) in central [Victoria](/source/Victoria_(Australia)), Australia. The town is in on the [Hume Highway](/source/Hume_Highway), 88 kilometres (55 mi) north of the state capital, [Melbourne](/source/Melbourne). At the [2011 census](/source/2011_Australian_census), Tallarook had a population of 789.[2]

Tallarook Post Office opened on 1 April 1861.[4]

The town is known in Australia for the [colloquialism](/source/Colloquialism), "Things are crook in Tallarook", believed to date to the [Great Depression](/source/Great_Depression) and unemployed travellers seeking work.[5] The phrase became the basis of a song composed by [Jack O'Hagan](/source/Jack_O'Hagan)—*Things Is Crook in Tallarook*.[6][7] It also features in a song written by [Garth Porter](/source/Garth_Porter) and [Lee Kernaghan](/source/Lee_Kernaghan), "Tallarook", released on [The Outback Club](/source/The_Outback_Club).

The main [North East railway](/source/North_East_railway_line) opened through the town in 1872 along with the [local railway station](/source/Tallarook_railway_station), and a [branch railway to Mansfield](/source/Mansfield_railway_line) was started in 1883, extended to [Mansfield](/source/Mansfield%2C_Victoria) in 1891, and [Alexandra](/source/Alexandra%2C_Victoria) in 1909, before being closed on 18 November 1978.[8]

Tallarook came to public attention in 1880 with the discovery of a recluse living in the ranges nearby. Dubbed *A Wildman at Tallarook*,[9] emigrant Henricke Nelsen was arrested and jailed, causing quite a sensation in the region. He is the subject of a 2008 book[10] by [Robert Hollingworth](/source/Robert_Hollingworth). While this book fictionalises Nelsen's life, much of the region's early history is also detailed.

The town is home to a cricket club competing in the Seymour District Cricket Association.

The industrialist [Essington Lewis](/source/Essington_Lewis) settled near Tallarook on his property, *Landscape* in his later years until his death in 1961.[11]
