==Life==
He was born in [London](/source/London) on 24 May 1890. He studied Sciences at [University College, London](/source/University_College%2C_London), graduating BSc in 1912. In 1913, aged only 23, he was elected a Fellow of the [Geological Society](/source/Geological_Society). He was appointed as a Geologist to the [British Geological Survey](/source/British_Geological_Survey) in 1914, but this was disrupted by the war.

In the [First World War](/source/First_World_War) he served with the [Royal Fusiliers](/source/Royal_Fusiliers) and [Suffolk Regiment](/source/Suffolk_Regiment), and saw action at [Gallipoli](/source/Gallipoli) and on the Somme. He reached the rank of Captain and was severely wounded in action and spent the final year working with the Intelligence section of the War Office.<ref name="auto">{{Cite journal|title=Geological Survey (Scottish Office) Mr. T. Returning to the BGS he was promoted to District Geologist in 1935 and was responsible in particular for ensuring British coal and [iron ore](/source/iron_ore) supplies during the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War). McLintock](/source/W._F._P._McLintock), Sir [Edward Battersby Bailey](/source/Edward_Battersby_Bailey), [Murray Macgregor](/source/Murray_Macgregor), [James Ernest Richey](/source/James_Ernest_Richey), Sir [A. E.
