'''Talarican''' (Tarkin) was a Scottish [Bishop of Sodor](/source/Bishop_of_the_Isles) (a diocese including the western islands of Scotland) of the eighth century.

== Biography==

He was probably of purely [Pictish](/source/Pictish) origin, though the ''[Aberdeen Breviary](/source/Aberdeen_Breviary)'' (1509) says he was born in Ireland. The legend in the ''Breviary'' states that he was raised to the episcopate by [Pope Gregory](/source/Pope_Gregory_II); and Adam King's ''Kalendar'' (1558) styles him "bischop and confess. in Scotland under King [Solvathius](/source/Solvathius)".

The [Bollandists](/source/Bollandists), following the chronology of the [Dalriadic](/source/Dalriadic) kings as adopted by [Pinkerton](/source/John_Pinkerton) and [Skene](/source/William_Forbes_Skene), place the reign of [Selvach](/source/Selvach) from 706 to 726; and, as [Gregory II](/source/Pope_Gregory_II) was pope from 715 to 731, conclude that Talarican became bishop about 720, a few years after the Columban monks of [Iona](/source/Iona) had been induced by [St. Egbert](/source/St._Egbert) to conform to the [Roman Rite](/source/Roman_Rite). He is said to have offered [Mass](/source/Mass_(liturgy)) every day, to have been noted for his zeal and his mortified life, and to have converted many pagans in the northern coasts of Scotland through his preaching and example. According to [Dempster](/source/Thomas_Dempster), he died in the island of [Lismore](/source/Lismore%2C_Scotland).

== Veneration ==
Talarican is considered a Catholic and Eastern Orthodox saint, and many churches subsequently founded in the Dioceses of [Moray](/source/Diocese_of_Moray), [Ross](/source/Diocese_of_Ross_(Scotland)), and [Aberdeen](/source/Diocese_of_Aberdeen) were dedicated in his honour. His name is perpetuated in the district of [Kiltarlity](/source/Kiltarlity) ([Inverness-shire](/source/Inverness-shire)), the church and cemetery of [Ceilltarraglan](/source/Portree) ([Skye](/source/Skye)), and wells still known as "St. Tarkin's" at [Fordyce](/source/Fordyce%2C_Banffshire), [Kilsyth](/source/Kilsyth), and elsewhere. His feast day is 30 October.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://catholicsaints.mobi/calendar/30-october.htm|title = Calendar of Saints - 30 October}}</ref>
