Province in Piura Region, Peru

**Talara** is a [province](/source/Province) in the [Piura Region](/source/Piura_Region), [Peru](/source/Peru). It is bordered by the [Pacific Ocean](/source/Pacific_Ocean) on the west, the province of [Paita](/source/Paita_Province) on the south, the province of [Sullana](/source/Sullana_Province) on the east and the [Tumbes Region](/source/Tumbes_Region)'s province of [Contralmirante Villar](/source/Contralmirante_Villar_Province) on the north. Its capital is the major [port](/source/Port) city of [Talara](/source/Talara). It also contains the beach resort of [Máncora](/source/M%C3%A1ncora). The province was created by the President [Manuel A. Odría](/source/Manuel_A._Odr%C3%ADa) in 1956.

## Attractions

The province has tourist attractions such as the Máncora beach resort, Cabo Blanco beach, Punta Balcones, Pariñas [Forest](/source/Forest), Amotape mountains, a whale [fossils](/source/Fossil) deposit, Plataforma del Zócalo Continental, [Punta Arenas Houses](/source/Punta_Arenas%2C_Peru), [Talara Refinery](http://www.petroperu.com.pe/Main.asp?T=3387) and the Talara Civic Centre. Talara had the greatest reserve of oil in all Peru.

[Punta Pariñas](/source/Punta_Pari%C3%B1as), the [westernmost](/source/Extreme_points_of_South_America) point in mainland [South America](/source/South_America), is located in the province's [La Brea District](/source/La_Brea_District).

## Climate

The province of Talara has a yearly average [temperature](/source/Temperature) of 25 °C (77 °F).

## Political division

The province is divided into six [districts](/source/District) ([Spanish](/source/Spanish_language): *distritos*, singular: *distrito*), each of which is headed by a mayor (*alcalde*):
