**Takuma Obayashi** (大林拓真, *Ōbayashi Takuma*; born 7 August 1999) is a Japanese [badminton](/source/Badminton) player affiliated with Tonami. He won his first [BWF World Tour](/source/BWF_World_Tour) title at the [2023 Indonesia Masters Super 100 II](/source/2023_Indonesia_Masters_Super_100_II).[1][2]

## Career

Obayashi made his international senior debut at the [Vietnam International Challenge](/source/Vietnam_International_Challenge) in 2018, and participated in his first [BWF World Tour](/source/BWF_World_Tour) tournament, the [Canada Open](/source/2018_Canada_Open_(badminton)), later that year. He reached the finals of a senior international tournament for the first time at the [Osaka International](/source/Osaka_International_(badminton)) in 2019, finishing runner-up to countryman and former [Saitama Sakae High School](/source/Saitama_Sakae_High_School) teammate [Koki Watanabe](/source/Koki_Watanabe).[3] Obayashi would go on to win his first international title the following year at the [Jamaica International](/source/Jamaica_International).

Obayashi won his first BWF World Tour title at the [Indonesia Masters Super 100 II](/source/2023_Indonesia_Masters_Super_100_II) in 2023. That year, he also reached the finals at the [Vietnam Open](/source/2023_Vietnam_Open) and won two more [International Challenge](/source/BWF_International_Challenge)-level tournaments, including the inaugural [Saipan International](/source/Saipan_International_(badminton)) after winning the final against top-seeded [Jeon Hyeok-jin](/source/Jeon_Hyeok-jin). Obayashi later achieved notoriety for his upset victory over [Anders Antonsen](/source/Anders_Antonsen) when making his Super 500-level debut at the [2023 Japan Masters](/source/2023_Japan_Masters), where he ultimately reached the semifinals before losing to [world no. 1](/source/BWF_World_Ranking#Number_one_ranked_players_timeline) [Viktor Axelsen](/source/Viktor_Axelsen).[4]
