The **Taksin Bridge** ([Thai](/source/Thai_language): สะพานสมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราช, [RTGS](/source/Royal_Thai_General_System_of_Transcription): **Saphan Somdet Phrachao Taksin Maha Rat**, pronounced [\[sā.pʰāːn sǒm.dèt pʰráʔ.t͡ɕâːw tàːk.sǐn mā.hǎː râːt\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Thai); usually abbreviated to simply สะพานตากสิน, [\[sā.pʰāːn tàːk.sǐn\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Thai)), or commonly known as **Sathon Bridge** (สะพานสาทร, [RTGS](/source/Royal_Thai_General_System_of_Transcription): **Saphan Sathon**, [\[sā.pʰāːn sǎː.tʰɔ̄ːn\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Thai)) is a bridge crossing the [Chao Phraya River](/source/Chao_Phraya_River) in [Bangkok](/source/Bangkok), [Thailand](/source/Thailand).

## History

It is the sixth bridge built across the Chao Phraya River to link [Sathon](/source/Sathon_Road) and Krung Thon Buri Roads in [Thonburi](/source/Thonburi) side (after [Rama VI Bridge](/source/Rama_VI_Bridge), [Memorial Bridge](/source/Memorial_Bridge_(Bangkok)), [Krung Thon Bridge](/source/Krung_Thon_Bridge), [Krungthep Bridge](/source/Krungthep_Bridge), [Phra Pin Klao Bridge](/source/Phra_Pin_Klao_Bridge), chronologically). His Majesty the King [Bhumibol Adulyadej](/source/Bhumibol_Adulyadej) (Rama IX) presided over the opening ceremony of the bridge on 6 May 1982 on the occasion of [Rattanakosin](/source/Rattanakosin)'s 200th anniversary. The bridge was named in honours King [Taksin](/source/Taksin), the founder and ruler of [Thonburi Kingdom](/source/Thonburi_Kingdom).

Before the construction of the bridge, the Chao Phraya River was crowded with huge ocean-going [steamers](/source/Steamship), cargo ships, and passenger ships passing up river to the port in the north of Bangkok. After completion of the bridge, the port was moved to the south at [Bangkok Port](/source/Bangkok_Port), also known as Khlong Toei Port.

## Characteristics

The bridge was designed with a large gap between opposing traffic directions to accommodate the canceled [Lavalin Skytrain](/source/Lavalin_Skytrain) system. The disused foundations were eventually adapted for the [BTS Skytrain](/source/BTS_Skytrain),[1] with train services across the bridge beginning on 5 December 1999.[2][3][4]

Under the bridge (seen from [Sathorn Pier](/source/Sathorn_Pier))

The entry ramp on the east side of the river contains the [Saphan Taksin BTS Station](/source/Saphan_Taksin_BTS_Station) as well as [Sathorn Pier](/source/Sathorn_Pier) for the [Chao Phraya Express Boat](/source/Chao_Phraya_Express_Boat).[5][6]
