"'''Take Back'''" is a song recorded by Japanese singer-songwriter [Koda Kumi](/source/Koda_Kumi) as her debut and [lead single](/source/Single_(music)) from her first studio album ''[Affection](/source/Affection_(Kumi_Koda_album))'' (2002). It was released on December 6, 2000 via [Rhythm Zone](/source/Rhythm_Zone) in two physical editions; a [CD single](/source/CD_single) and [12" vinyl](/source/Gramophone_record). Additionally, Sounday and Orpheus Records distributed the song in North America in May 2001 with four more formats, but was remixed as a [dance](/source/Dance_music) number by [Jonathan Peters](/source/Jonathan_Peters). The track was written by Koda herself, composed by Kazuhito Kikuchi and produced by [Max Matsuura](/source/Max_Matsuura). The result was finalized after she had won a competition to find another artist for the [Avex Trax](/source/Avex_Trax) company, which later published Rhythm Zone under Matsuura's guidance.

Musically, "Take Back" is an [R&B](/source/R%26B) number that incorporates elements of [pop](/source/Pop_music) and electronic instrumentation, such as keyboards and synthesizers. Koda's inspiration towards the track was based on her interest with [J-pop](/source/J-pop), and their revolving culture with the R&B scene, particularly with her admiration of label mate [M-flo](/source/M-flo). Because an English version was adapted for the Jonathan Peters' remix, she re-wrote it with Kikuchi. Upon its release, the single received positive reviews from [music critics](/source/Music_journalism), who commended the sound and production, but understood its lack of general interest with the Japanese market.

Commercially, "Take Back" experienced minimal success in Japan, reaching number 59 on the [Oricon Singles Chart](/source/Oricon_Singles_Chart). Despite its lower peak, it fared better in the United States, where it charted inside the [Dance Club Songs](/source/Dance_Club_Songs), [Dance/Electronic Singles Sales](/source/Dance%2FElectronic_Singles_Sales) and [Hot Single Sales](/source/Hot_Single_Sales) categories, all published by ''[Billboard](/source/Billboard_(magazine))''. In order to promote the single, Koda featured in its accompanying music video, directed by Toku, which featured her in various rooms with back-up dancers and singing the track. Furthermore, the singer performed it on various concert tours such as [Best: First Things Live](/source/Koda_Kumi_Live_Tour_2005%3A_First_Things), [Black Cherry](/source/Live_Tour_2007%3A_Black_Cherry) and her 10th Anniversary tour, and made an appearance on her [greatest hits](/source/greatest_hits) album ''[Best: First Things](/source/Best%3A_First_Things)'' (2004).

In 2000, Koda auditioned for the [Avex Trax](/source/Avex_Trax) competition "Dream Audition", and came second out of 120,000 female participants. Subsequently, Avex employed Japanese producer [Max Matsuura](/source/Max_Matsuura) to start-up a new sub-label in 1999, named [Rhythm Zone](/source/Rhythm_Zone), whilst still working with frequent female collaborators [Ayumi Hamasaki](/source/Ayumi_Hamasaki) and [Namie Amuro](/source/Namie_Amuro).<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.avexnet.or.jp/beatfreak/142/artists/ayumi.html|title=Loveppears|publisher=Avex Net|date=2000|access-date=January 25, 2017|language=ja|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20040820032901/http://www.avexnet.or.jp/beatfreak/142/artists/ayumi.html|archive-date=August 20, 2004}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.jacompa.or.jp/rekishi/d1995.htm|title=第37回日本レコード大賞|publisher=[Japan Record Award](/source/Japan_Record_Award)s|date=1995|access-date=January 25, 2017|language=ja|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080615043019/http://www.jacompa.or.jp/rekishi/d1995.htm|archive-date=June 15, 2008}}</ref> That same year, Avex appointed Koda to Matsuura, and he eventually signed her to the label that same year.<ref name="nippop">{{cite web|url=http://nippop.com/features/feature_id-17/|title=Telling Secrets – A Konversation with Kumi Koda|publisher=Nippop|date=April 2, 2005|access-date=January 17, 2009}}</ref> Her label had hired composer and arranger Kazuhito Kikuchi to compose "Take Back", but Avex instructed Koda to take singing lessons every weekend in [Tokyo](/source/Tokyo), Japan before recording it.<ref name="interview"/> At that time, she stated that she didn't feel "anxious" about the situation, having already spent 500,000 yen (approximately $4056 [USD](/source/United_States_dollar)) she won from the open audition towards food.<ref name="interview"/>

However, Avex refused to promote Koda's work equally due to her excessive weight gain, and claims of her being "ugly".<ref name="interview2">{{cite episode | title=Kumi Koda Live Special|network=[Nippon Television](/source/Nippon_Television)|air-date=May 2006|number=1|minutes=64}}</ref> Matsuura was also unimpressed by Koda's image, declaring that they had tried to look for "the best one" for their label.<ref name="interview2"/> Later on the stages, Avex executives threatened to fire Koda if no improvements were put into place, which she eventually did but wasn't notified until her single "[Real Emotion/1000 no Kotoba](/source/Real_Emotion%2F1000_no_Kotoba)".<ref name="interview"/> In mid 2000, Kumi was asked by Avex to make her promotional debut through a photo shoot with photographer Toku, which led to the shooting of the cover sleeve for "Take Back". The artwork features her sporting a red and gold outfit, standing outside of a [tunnel](/source/tunnel). According to Toku, he said "during the shooting of the cover for [her] single, 'Take Back', no one had told [her] what the shoot was for, so [she] just stood in front of the camera clueless".<ref name="interview"/>

==Composition==
"Take Back" was written by Koda herself, composed by Kazuhito Kikuchi and produced by [Max Matsuura](/source/Max_Matsuura).<ref name="cd">{{cite AV media notes |title=Take Back|others=Koda, Kumi|year=2000|type=CD single; Liner notes|publisher=[Rhythm Zone](/source/Rhythm_Zone)|id=RZCD-45018}}</ref> It was recorded at Avex and On Air Azabu Studios in Tokyo, Japan through mid-2000, whilst the sound and arrangement was handled by H-wonder.<ref name="cd"/> Musically, it is an [R&B](/source/R%26B) number that incorporates elements of [pop](/source/Pop_music) and electronic instrumentation, such as keyboards and synthesizers.<ref name="zone">{{cite web|url=http://rhythmzone.net/koda/discography/detail.php?id=1004141|title=Take Back – Kumi Kumi|publisher=Kumi Koda's official website (rhythmzone.net)|access-date=December 7, 2015|language=ja}}</ref> In a biographic article by [Yahoo! Through the early stages of the song's parent album ''[Affection](/source/Affection_(Kumi_Koda_album))'', she had only listened to Japanese music and enjoyed reading the lyrics. The singer also expressed her admiration for fellow label mate [M-flo](/source/M-flo), who was heavily into R&B, and wanted to "emulate" his style.<ref name="nippop"/> However, executives at Rhythm Zone and Avex instructed her to infuse Western music into her work for a much wider musical influence, as she refused to approach the style at the start.<ref name="nippop"/> For the North American release, Koda re-recorded the song in English, and it was remixed by American DJ and producer [Jonathan Peters](/source/Jonathan_Peters). According to Koda, "[they] hadn't really intended to release [the remix], but remixes were all the rage then".<ref name="nippop"/> Particularly, Avex's New York office confessed that they thought the remix would do well thought the club scene.<ref name="nippop"/>

==Reception==
"Take Back" received positive reviews from [music critics](/source/Music_journalism). In an article of Jame World, Seth Figlerowicz was positive towards its sound, labelling it very "pleasant".<ref name="jameworld"/> However, he did note that the composition was more suitable for the American audience than the Japanese music scene, hence the lack of success and "commercial appeal" in the latter region.<ref name="jameworld"/> Similarly, a contributing editor of ''CD Journal'' praised the song's longevity and R&B sound, and labelled it "impressive".<ref name="cdjournal">{{cite web|url=http://artist.cdjournal.com/d/affection/3202010992|title=Kumi Koda / Affection [CD]|work=CD Journal|date=March 2003|access-date=January 30, 2017|language=ja}}</ref> An editor from [Yahoo! [...] "Real Emotion" and "Take Back" come out as something very similar to [Ayumi Hamasaki](/source/Ayumi_Hamasaki)'s works."<ref>{{cite web|author=Greenberg, Adam|url=http://www.allmusic.com/album/koda-kumi-driving-hits-mw0001724009|title=Koda Kumi Driving Hit's – Kumi Koda|publisher=[AllMusic](/source/AllMusic)|date=2009|access-date=January 30, 2017}}</ref>

Upon its release, Koda felt insecure about the singles commercial performance, fearing about its first week sales and peak position.<ref name="interview"/> To an extent, "Take Back" experienced minor impact in Japan. In the United States, the Jonathan Peter's remix in English experienced success on the [''Billboard'' charts](/source/Billboard_charts). The accompanying music video for "Take Back" was directed by Toku, and took one day to shoot and two days to edit.<ref name="cd"/> According to Seth Figlerowicz, who reviewed the singers' DVD compilation ''7 Spirits'', the video opens with a "young Koda Kumi that has long and black hair.
