'''Tagtabazar,''' formerly known as '''Panjdeh''' or '''Pendi''',<ref name=TTG>{{cite book|author1=Paul Brummell|authorlink1=Paul Brummell|title=Turkmenistan|date=2005|publisher=[Bradt Travel Guides](/source/Bradt_Travel_Guides)|isbn=9781841621449|pages=110–111|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=fG9zk5Y3MugC&dq=Tagtabazar&pg=PA222|accessdate=27 November 2014}}</ref> is a [town](/source/town) and capital of [Tagtabazar District](/source/Tagtabazar_District) in the [Mary Province](/source/Mary_Province) of [Turkmenistan](/source/Turkmenistan). It is located roughly 20 km west of the [Afghanistan–Turkmenistan border](/source/Afghanistan%E2%80%93Turkmenistan_border), along the [Murgap River](/source/Marghab_River). In 2022, it had a population of 13,312 people.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Türkmenistanyň Statistika baradaky döwlet komiteti |url=https://www.stat.gov.tm/population-census |access-date=2026-02-10 |website=www.stat.gov.tm}}</ref>

== History ==
Tagtabazar was initially located circa 20 km west of its current location; 20 km south of [Daşköpri](/source/Da%C5%9Fk%C3%B6pri), and 4 km north of the current village of [Dostluk](/source/Dostluk%2C_Tagtabazar).

In February 1885, the [Russian Empire](/source/Russian_Empire), expanding southwards, entered the Panjdeh oasis. As no border had been decided then, they confronted [Afghan](/source/Emirate_of_Afghanistan) soldiers, backed by the [British Empire](/source/British_Empire). After clashes causing hundreds of casualties, the Russian and the British agreed to eventually define the Afghan border, avoiding a large-scale war between the two empires. This episode is now known as the [Panjdeh incident](/source/Panjdeh_incident), or as the battle of the [Kushka](/source/Kushk_River) by the Russian. A monument dedicated to fallen soldiers lies north of the current village of Dostluk.

On 9 November 2022, [Serhetabat District](/source/Serhetabat_District) was merged into Tagtabazar District.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Kanunlar |url=https://mejlis.gov.tm/single-decree/6?lang=tm |access-date=2026-02-10 |website=mejlis.gov.tm}}</ref>
