A **syrt** is a kind of an elevated [landform](/source/Landform) in [Russia](/source/Russia) and [Central Asia](/source/Central_Asia).[1]

The word means "[highland](/source/Highland_(geography))", "[ridge](/source/Ridge)" or "[backbone](/source/Vertebral_column)" in [Turkic languages](/source/Turkic_languages) (*sırt*) and is present in Turkic [toponymy](/source/Toponym) in the mentioned areas: in [Tien Shan](/source/Tien_Shan), [Pamirs](/source/Pamirs), South [Urals](/source/Urals), such as [Obshchiy Syrt](/source/Obshchiy_Syrt) by [Urals](/source/Urals), [Uzun-Syrt](/source/Uzun-Syrt) ("Long [back](/source/Dorsum_(biology))") plateau by [Koktebel](/source/Koktebel) in [Crimea](/source/Crimea).

It is a [denudational](/source/Denudation) [upland](/source/Highland_(geography)) or elevated flatland, a kind of [dissected plateau](/source/Dissected_plateau). Syrts may be separated from each other by higher ridges. At the same time, syrts may serve as [water divides](/source/Water_divide) between [drainage basins](/source/Drainage_basin) for larger rivers.

The term should not be confused with the Latin term *[syrtis](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/syrtis)* and the derived term "syrt" for sandy shores or [quicksand](/source/Quicksand).
