'''Syosset station''' is a [commuter rail](/source/commuter_rail) station on the [Long Island Rail Road](/source/Long_Island_Rail_Road)'s [Port Jefferson Branch](/source/Port_Jefferson_Branch) in [Syosset, New York](/source/Syosset%2C_New_York). It is located at Jackson Avenue and Underhill Boulevard, south of [New York State Route 25A](/source/New_York_State_Route_25A), but north of [Jericho Turnpike](/source/NYS_Route_25) and the [Long Island Expressway](/source/I-495_(NY)). Syosset's downtown was built around the station.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web|title=Long Island History: Syosset |work=Newsday |url=http://www.newsday.com/community/guide/lihistory/ny-historytown-hist003j,0,6655300.story |access-date=March 10, 2007 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070824093345/http://www.newsday.com/community/guide/lihistory/ny-historytown-hist003j,0,6655300.story |archive-date=August 24, 2007}}</ref> There are no connections to [NICE](/source/Nassau_Inter-County_Express) buses at the station, though taxi service is available.

==Location==
The Syosset station is located in [the hamlet of the same name](/source/Syosset%2C_New_York), within the [Town of Oyster Bay](/source/Town_of_Oyster_Bay).<ref name=":0" /> Located approximately {{convert|30.9|mi|km|abbr=on|0}} east of [Pennsylvania Station](/source/Pennsylvania_Station_(New_York)) by rail, the station is at the southeast edge of the town center, on the east side of Jackson Avenue near its intersection with Underhill Boulevard.

==History==

Syosset station was initially built by the [Hicksville and Syosset Railroad](/source/Hicksville_and_Syosset_Railroad) in 1854.<ref>[http://www.trainsarefun.com/lirr/branchnotes.htm#Wading River Bob Emery's LIRR Branch Notes; Wading River (Port Jefferson) Branch (TrainAreFun.com)]</ref><ref>*[http://arrts-arrchives.com/H&CSBRR.html Hicksville & Cold Spring Harbor Branch, including Map from 1855 (Arrt's Arrchives)]</ref> The station's former building was built in 1872. The building's first location was at Lockwood's Grove station, on the former [Cedarhurst Cut-off](/source/Cedarhurst_Cut-off). The LIRR moved the building to Syosset station in 1877, as the [Far Rockaway – Lockwood's Grove station](/source/Far_Rockaway_%E2%80%93_Lockwood's_Grove_(NY%26R_station)) had since been abandoned. The building was renovated in 1944, then torn down and replaced in 1948.<ref>[http://www.trainsarefun.com/lirrphotos/lirrstationshistory.htm LIRR station History (TrainsAreFun.com)] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170526225709/http://www.trainsarefun.com/lirrphotos/lirrstationshistory.htm |date= May 26, 2017 }}</ref><ref>{{cite web|title=LIRR Port Jefferson Branch|url=http://www.stationreporter.net/ptjeff.htm|work=Station Reporter|access-date=March 21, 2013|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140222002152/http://www.stationreporter.net/ptjeff.htm|archive-date=February 22, 2014}}</ref> In 1970 the station was electrified, along with the rest of the Port Jefferson Branch between [Mineola](/source/Mineola_(LIRR_station)) and [Huntington stations](/source/Huntington_(LIRR_station)).<ref>{{Cite news|title=Change at Jamaica Is Only a Memory For 12,000 Riders |first=Werner |last=Bamberger |url=https://www.nytimes.com/1970/10/20/archives/change-at-jamaica-is-only-a-memory-for-12000-riders.html |newspaper=The New York Times |date=October 20, 1970 |page=88 |access-date=September 17, 2009}}</ref>

The station was again renovated from October 2018 to June 2019. This renovation included a new station house and a sculpture known as "Sail", designed by Tom Fruin. Digital signage with real-time information was also added to the station.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.amodernli.com/project/syosset-station|title=Syosset Station Enhancement (Completed 06/2019)|date=2019-12-05|access-date=2020-10-08|website=A Modern LI}}</ref>

=== Transit-oriented development ===
The Town of Oyster Bay has designated Syosset station as one of its targets for [transit-oriented development](/source/transit-oriented_development). Known as the "Syosset Downtown Redevelopment and Revitalization Plan," the project aims to re-create the hamlet's downtown through [mixed-use development](/source/mixed-use_development) and improved human-scale zoning regulations.<ref name="plan">{{cite web |url=http://www.oysterbaytown.com/vertical/Sites/%7B7D6BDBFB-65E8-4A80-B369-DE0267DC78CB%7D/uploads/%7BA4419155-B452-4752-A776-A89068716E37%7D.PDF |title=Syosset Downtown Redevelopment and Revitalization Plan |publisher=Town of Oyster Bay |accessdate= June 28, 2010}}</ref> The master-plan includes suggestions such as removing the grade crossing at Jackson Avenue, creating a pedestrian plaza by eliminating road traffic on a portion of Cold Spring Road, parking reconfiguration, and the building of a community center as ways of focusing growth in the downtown area and reducing unnecessary trips by car.<ref name="plan"/>

==Station layout==
Syosset has two high-level [side platform](/source/side_platform)s, each 12 cars long. The station is on a curve, necessitating a wider-than-normal gap between the platform and the train. At places where train doors open, most of the gaps span ten inches or more;<ref name="kelly">{{Cite web|last=Kelly |first=Raymond P. |title=Addressing the Gap: LIRR President's Raymond P. On January 30, 1996, in separate incidents, three commuters in 90 minutes fell into the gap at the station due to icy platform conditions.<ref>{{Cite news |last=Lakin |first=Eden |title=Three falls in Syosset within 90 minutes |newspaper=Newsday |date=January 20, 2007 |url=http://www.newsday.com/news/specials/nyg-lisyos0120,0,1748815.story?coll=ny-relateditems-news |access-date=March 10, 2007 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070930235643/http://www.newsday.com/news/specials/nyg-lisyos0120,0,1748815.story?coll=ny-relateditems-news |archive-date=September 30, 2007}}</ref>

The LIRR has installed platform gap lighting and camera surveillance systems, and new platform sections have shifted from the current location to remedy the gap situation. The LIRR has also added platform conductors to monitor train boarding, instruct crews to announce the gap at the station, and assist passengers.<ref name="kelly" /><ref name="melina" /> Further improvements, including changing railroad operation standards and the viable use of retractable [gap filler](/source/gap_filler)s (such as those used in a few [New York City Subway](/source/New_York_City_Subway) stations) were examined. The railroad also retained a consultant to review train operations to suggest further changes.<ref name="kelly" />

In the 2000s, numerous Syosset-area residents and politicians, such as former Nassau County Presiding Officer [Judy Jacobs](/source/Judy_Jacobson) argued the best solution to eliminate the gap problem would be to force the LIRR to close the Syosset station and reopen the [Landia](/source/Landia_(LIRR_station)) station to the southwest; Landia is on a straight track.<ref name=":1">{{Cite news |last=Nash |first=Denise |date=November 17, 2006 |title=Jacobs Still Pressuring LIRR to Bridge the Gap in Syosset |url=http://www.antonnews.com/syossetjerichotribune/2006/11/17/news/ |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20070930014511/http://www.antonnews.com/syossetjerichotribune/2006/11/17/news/ |archive-date=September 30, 2007 |access-date=March 10, 2007 |newspaper=Syosset-Jericho Tribune}}</ref> A mall had also been proposed near the Landia station site. Michael Pally, an [MTA](/source/Metropolitan_Transportation_Authority) board member representing [Suffolk County](/source/Suffolk_County%2C_New_York) and who also worked for a real estate firm that represented the company that proposed the construction of the mall, believed the Syosset station should be closed because more parking spaces would be available at Landia. Opponents of the mall argued that opening Landia while closing Syosset would be a ruse to direct people to the mall. The [Town of Oyster Bay](/source/Town_of_Oyster_Bay%2C_New_York), which at the time controlled the Landia station site, gathered information before determining whether to ask the LIRR to conduct a study.<ref name=":1" />
