Symposium on Parallelism in Algorithms and Architectures Abbreviation SPAA Discipline Parallel computing and distributed computing Publication details Publisher ACM History 1989– Frequency annual

The **ACM Symposium on Parallelism in Algorithms and Architectures** (**SPAA**) is an [academic conference](/source/Academic_conference) in the fields of [parallel computing](/source/Parallel_computing) and [distributed computing](/source/Distributed_computing). It is sponsored by the [Association for Computing Machinery](/source/Association_for_Computing_Machinery) special interest groups [SIGACT](/source/ACM_SIGACT) and [SIGARCH](/source/ACM_SIGARCH), and it is organized in cooperation with the [European Association for Theoretical Computer Science](/source/European_Association_for_Theoretical_Computer_Science) (EATCS).[1]

## History

SPAA was first organised on 18–21 June 1989, in [Santa Fe, New Mexico](/source/Santa_Fe%2C_New_Mexico), [United States](/source/United_States).[2] In 1989–2002, SPAA was known as **Symposium on Parallel Algorithms and Architectures**. In 2003, the name changed to *Symposium on Parallelism in Algorithms and Architectures* to reflect the extended scope of the conference.[3]

In 2003 and 2007, SPAA was part of the [Federated Computing Research Conference](/source/Federated_Computing_Research_Conference) (FCRC). In 1998, 2005, 2009, and 2024, SPAA was co-located with the ACM [Symposium on Principles of Distributed Computing](/source/Symposium_on_Principles_of_Distributed_Computing) (PODC).[4]
