'''Syde''', often in the past spelt '''Side''', is a small village and [civil parish](/source/civil_parish) in [Gloucestershire](/source/Gloucestershire), England. It lies in the [Cotswolds](/source/Cotswolds), near the source of the [River Frome](/source/River_Frome%2C_Stroud), some six miles north west of [Cirencester](/source/Cirencester) and seven miles east of [Painswick](/source/Painswick).

There is a [Church of England](/source/Church_of_England) [parish church](/source/parish_church) called [St Mary's](/source/Church_of_St_Mary_the_Virgin%2C_Syde).<ref>[http://www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/churchentry?CCC=GLS,ID=393,FT=Syde%20St%20Mary%20Church%20of%20England St Mary, Syde - Church of England] at genuki.org.uk, accessed 25 November 2013</ref>

The principal house is Syde Manor, a [listed building](/source/listed_building) which dates from the 16th and 17th centuries, built of stone rubble with a [Cotswold stone](/source/Cotswold_stone) roof and gables. Some of its mullioned windows have unusual three-centred arches at their heads. The front of the house which has the main entrance was added in the late 18th or early 19th century.<ref>[Nikolaus Pevsner](/source/Nikolaus_Pevsner), ''The Buildings of England'', Vol. 40 (1970), p. 446</ref>

==History==
''The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland'' (1868) says of Side (as it spelt the name): {{quote|SIDE, a parish in the hundred of Rapsgate, county Gloucester, 7 miles N.W. of Cirencester, its post town, and 7 E. of [Painswick](/source/Painswick). The parish, which is of small extent, is situated near the Roman [Ermine Street](/source/Ermine_Street). The surface is hilly. The soil consists of stonebrash and gravel, with a rocky subsoil. There is no village. The [living](/source/benefice) is a rectory in the [diocese of Gloucester and Bristol](/source/diocese_of_Gloucester_and_Bristol), value £126. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is a small stone edifice, with a tower and three bells. The parochial charities produce about £2 per annum. John Hall, Esq., is [lord of the manor](/source/lord_of_the_manor).<ref>''The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland'' (1868)</ref>}}

John Marius Wilson's [Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales](/source/Imperial_Gazetteer_of_England_and_Wales) (1870–1872) says: {{quote|SIDE, or Syde, a parish in Cirencester district, Gloucester; 7½ miles NW by N of [Cirencester r. station](/source/Cirencester_Town_railway_station). Post town, [Winstone](/source/Winstone), under Cirencester. Acres, 614. Real property, £886. Pop., 55. Houses, 11. The manor belongs to J. Hall, Esq. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol. Value, £126. Patron, J. Hall, Esq. The church is good.<ref>[http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/11350 Syde] at visionofbritain.org.uk, accessed 25 November 2013</ref>}}

==Governance==
Because of its small population, Syde has a [parish meeting](/source/parish_meeting), at which all electors can attend and vote, rather than a [parish council](/source/Parish_councils_in_England). It forms part of the Ermin ward of [Cotswold District](/source/Cotswold_District), which together with [Gloucestershire County Council](/source/Gloucestershire_County_Council) provides all [local government](/source/local_government) services.<ref>[http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/extra/index.aspx?articleid=107843 Syde Parish Meeting] at gloucestershire.gov.uk, accessed 25 November 2013</ref>

The parish is part of the parliamentary constituency of [North Cotswolds](/source/North_Cotswolds_(UK_Parliament_constituency)),<ref>{{cite web|title=Location of North Cotswolds |url=https://members.parliament.uk/constituency/4201/location |website=parliament.uk|access-date=4 January 2024}}</ref> represented in [parliament](/source/Parliament_of_the_United_Kingdom) by the Conservative Sir [Geoffrey Clifton-Brown](/source/Geoffrey_Clifton-Brown_(born_1953)).<ref>{{cite web|title=Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown |url=https://members.parliament.uk/member/249/contact |website=parliament.uk|access-date=4 January 2024}}</ref>
