'''Switchover''' is the manual switch from one system to a [redundant](/source/redundancy_(engineering)) or standby [computer](/source/computer) [server](/source/Server_(computing)), [system](/source/system), or [network](/source/computer_network) upon the failure or [abnormal termination](/source/abnormal_end) of the previously active server, system, or network, or to perform system maintenance, such as installing patches, and upgrading software or hardware.<ref> {{cite web |url=https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd298067(v=exchg.150).aspx |title=Switchovers and Failovers |publisher=[Microsoft](/source/Microsoft) |access-date=November 9, 2015 |quote=A switchover is a scheduled outage of a database or server that's explicitly initiated by an administrator, typically in preparation for performing a maintenance operation}}</ref>

Automatic switchover of a redundant system on an error condition, without human intervention, is called [failover](/source/failover). Manual switchover on error would be used if automatic failover is not available, possibly because the overall system is too complex.
