'''Swfdec''' is an outdated [free and open-source](/source/free_and_open-source_software) replacement for [Adobe Flash Player](/source/Adobe_Flash_Player). It runs on [Linux](/source/Linux) and [FreeBSD](/source/FreeBSD) and is distributed under the terms of the [GNU Lesser General Public License](/source/GNU_Lesser_General_Public_License) (LGPL).<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20080820015503/http://swfdec.freedesktop.org/ swfdec.freedesktop.org]</ref> Its last release was 0.8.4, on {{Start date and age|2008|12|21}} and latest in stable 0.9.2 of 2008-11-11.

Development of Swfdec has stopped. As of March 2016, the most recent commit to its Git repository was in December 2009.<ref>[http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/swfdec-commits/ The Swfdec-commits Archives]</ref>

==Technical==
Swfdec is a library that can be used to play [Flash files](/source/SWF). There is a standalone player and a [Mozilla](/source/Mozilla) plugin that uses the library. Swfdec supports Flash through version 4,{{Citation needed|date=April 2009}} and most features of Flash through version 9. The player was routinely updated to support the latest features demanded by video players, resulting in most (including [YouTube](/source/YouTube), Google Video, Lulu.tv, AOL video, and CNN video) working at any given time.

==Linux support==
Swfdec was chosen in 2007 as the Flash player for [Fedora](/source/Fedora_(operating_system)),<ref>[http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/Swfdec Fedora 9 Swfdec Feature Page]</ref> and it has been ported to [DirectFB](/source/DirectFB) for embedded use alongside its [X11](/source/X11) and [GTK+](/source/GTK%2B) bindings. It uses the [Cairo graphics library](/source/Cairo_(graphics)) for rendering, [GStreamer](/source/GStreamer) for decoding audio and video,<ref>{{cite web |date=2007-04-04 |author=Jonathan Corbet |title=Two approaches to Flash |publisher=[LWN.net](/source/LWN.net) |url=https://lwn.net/Articles/228637/}}</ref> and [PulseAudio](/source/PulseAudio), [OSS](/source/Open_Sound_System), or [ALSA](/source/Advanced_Linux_Sound_Architecture) for audio playback.
