**Swartkops** is a village in the [Eastern Cape](/source/Eastern_Cape) province of [South Africa](/source/South_Africa).

The location is on the [Swartkops River](/source/Swartkops_River), 11 km north of [Port Elizabeth](/source/Port_Elizabeth) and 1,6 km from the Indian Ocean. *Swartkops* means "black hills" in [Afrikaans](/source/Afrikaans), and the name is said to refer to surrounding hillocks crested with dark shadows.[2]

A railway junction was built here by the [Cape Government Railways](/source/Cape_Government_Railways) in 1872, to service the lines being constructed to [Makhanda](/source/Makhanda%2C_Eastern_Cape) and Alicedale in the east, [Port Elizabeth](/source/Port_Elizabeth) to the south, and [Uitenhage](/source/Uitenhage) to the west.[3]

### Roads

The main route through Swartkops is Grahamstown Road ([R102 regional route](/source/R102_(South_Africa))) which leads southwards to Deal Party and [Port Elizabeth](/source/Port_Elizabeth) and northwards to [Motherwell](/source/Motherwell%2C_South_Africa) and Markman.

The [M17 route](/source/M17_(Port_Elizabeth)), named Dibanisa Road, passes Swartkops to the west running northwards to Markman and southwards to [iBhayi](/source/Ibhayi). The [M19 route](/source/M19_(Port_Elizabeth)), named Trunk Road, passes Swartkops to the south running westwards to [Redhouse](/source/Redhouse%2C_South_Africa), Perseverance, [Despatch](/source/Despatch%2C_South_Africa) and [Uitenhage](/source/Uitenhage).
