**Suzanne Pepper** (1939 – 29 June 2022[1]) was a Hong Kong–based [American](/source/American_literature) [political scientist](/source/Political_scientist) and journalist. She was editor of the [Chinese University of Hong Kong](/source/Chinese_University_of_Hong_Kong)'s *China Review* from 1995 to 1996.[2]

## Biography

Pepper left the United States for [Hong Kong](/source/Hong_Kong) in the 1960s to continue [Chinese language](/source/Chinese_language) studies that she had begun at the University of California at Berkeley. There she met fellow languages student [VG Kulkarni](/source/VG_Kulkarni), an [Indian Army](/source/Indian_Army) officer posted to India's consulate in Hong Kong. After several years in New York where they married in 1970, they returned to Hong Kong in 1973.[1][3]

Pepper earned a PhD in [political science](/source/Political_science) from [University of California at Berkeley](/source/University_of_California_at_Berkeley) in 1972.[1] She authored a number of political science works focusing on China in general, and Hong Kong in particular. She was also a founding contributor to *[Hong Kong Free Press](/source/Hong_Kong_Free_Press)*.[4]

Pepper kept a blog, *Hong Kong Focus*, which is now maintained by Hong Kong Free Press.[5]

Pepper was an [honorary fellow](/source/Honorary_fellow) of the Chinese University of Hong Kong,[6] and an honorary lifetime member of the [Foreign Correspondents Club](/source/Foreign_Correspondents_Club) of Hong Kong.[7]

Pepper died on 29 June 2022 in Hong Kong, following a short illness.[1]
