# Suursadam

**Suursadam** ('Big harbour'), or **Suursadam Harbour**, is a [harbour](/source/Harbour) on the Estonian island of [Hiiumaa](/source/Hiiumaa), near [Kärdla](/source/K%C3%A4rdla). Formerly, it was the most important harbour on Hiiumaa.[1]

In the [Middle Ages](/source/Middle_Ages), [lime](/source/Lime_(material)) was burned and ships were built there. Lime was an important export article.[1]

In 1848 a famous ship, the [barque](/source/Barque) *[Hioma](/source/Hioma)*, was built there. This ship, which was sailed even on the seas of the [Southern Hemisphere](/source/Southern_Hemisphere), belonged to the [Baltic German](/source/Baltic_Germans) nobleman [Heinrich Georg Eduard von Ungern Sternberg](/source/Heinrich_Georg_Eduard_von_Ungern_Sternberg).[1]
