The '''Sutla''' ({{IPA|hr|sûtla|lang}}) or '''Sotla''' ({{IPA|sl|ˈsóːtla|lang}}) is a [river](/source/river) flowing through [Slovenia](/source/Slovenia) and [Croatia](/source/Croatia), mostly forming their border. It is a [tributary](/source/tributary) to the [Sava](/source/Sava), itself a tributary to the [Danube](/source/Danube). It is {{convert|89|km}} long and has a watershed area of {{convert|584|km2}}.{{GeoQuelle|Sava||13}}

==Overview==
The Sutla flows through the following municipalities:
*in Slovenia: [Rogatec](/source/Rogatec), [Rogaška Slatina](/source/Roga%C5%A1ka_Slatina), [Podčetrtek](/source/Pod%C4%8Detrtek), [Bistrica ob Sotli](/source/Bistrica_ob_Sotli), [Brežice](/source/Bre%C5%BEice)
*in Croatia: [Đurmanec](/source/%C4%90urmanec), [Hum na Sutli](/source/Hum_na_Sutli), [Desinić](/source/Desini%C4%87), [Zagorska Sela](/source/Zagorska_Sela), [Klanjec](/source/Klanjec), [Kraljevec na Sutli](/source/Kraljevec_na_Sutli), [Brdovec](/source/Brdovec_(municipality))

The hydrological parameters of the Sutla are regularly monitored in Croatia at [Zelenjak](/source/Zelenjak).<ref>{{cite web | url = http://hidro.hr/hidro_e.php?id=hidro&param=Podaci_e | title = Daily hydrological report | publisher = [Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service](/source/Croatian_Meteorological_and_Hydrological_Service) | access-date = 2010-09-09}}</ref>

The division of the Sutla/Sotla basin area between Croatia and Slovenia is inconsistent in sources; Croatian sources claim either {{convert|343|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}}<ref>{{Croatia Yearbook 2015|page=49}}</ref> or {{convert|455|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}},<ref>{{cite web | url = http://www.sabor.hr/fgs.axd?id=4321 | language = hr | title = Karakteristike značajnijih vodotoka | work = Vodnogospodarska osnova Hrvatske - Strategija upravljanja vodama | publisher = [Croatian Parliament](/source/Croatian_Parliament) | access-date = 2011-12-19 }}</ref> while Slovenian sources claim either {{convert|477|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}}<ref>[http://zgds.zrc-sazu.si/GV2007/gv79-1-prah.pdf] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120227031932/http://zgds.zrc-sazu.si/GV2007/gv79-1-prah.pdf |date=2012-02-27 }} Visokovodni valovi – Sotla nad Draganjo in Draganja na izlivu (delovna verzija). Elaborat, Vodnogospodarski inštitut. Ljubljani, 2000.</ref> or {{convert|451|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}}.{{GeoQuelle|SI|SURS}}

[Kozje Park](/source/Kozje_Park) (Slovene: {{lang|sl|Kozjanski park}}), established in 1981 as Trebče Memorial Park ({{lang|sl|Spominski park Trebče}}), is located in Slovenian territory west of the Sotla. It covers {{convert|206|km2|abbr=on}} of the landscape of the [Kozje Hills](/source/Kozje_Hills) ({{lang|sl|Kozjansko hribovje}}), including [wetland](/source/wetland)s along the Sotla. It is the habitat of over 120 bird species and of about 950 [higher plant](/source/vascular_plant) species.<ref>{{cite book |url=http://www.arhiv.mop.gov.si/fileadmin/mop.gov.si/pageuploads/publikacije/drugo/zavarovana_obmocja.pdf |title=Zavarovana območja v Sloveniji |language=sl, en|trans-title=Protected Areas of Slovenia |publisher=Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning, Republic of Slovenia |first=Janez |last=Bizjak |isbn=978-961-6392-61-7 |year=2008}}</ref>

The earliest known mention of Sutla was in 1028, as ''Zontla''. The name is pre-Slavic in origin and comes from {{lang|sla-x-proto|*Sǫtъla}}. The root {{lang|ine-x-proto|*Sont-/*Sant-}} does not have a known meaning.<ref>{{cite journal|url=http://hrcak.srce.hr/118625|title=Predantički toponimi u današnjoj (i povijesnoj) Hrvatskoj|trans-title=Pre-Roman placenames in present-day (and historical) Croatia|journal=Folia onomastica Croatica|issue=22|date=March 2013|page=209|last=Šimunović|first=Petar|publisher=[Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts](/source/Croatian_Academy_of_Sciences_and_Arts)|location=Zagreb|language=hr|format=PDF|access-date=18 January 2016}}</ref>
