Friedlander graduated from [University College, London](/source/University_College_London) with a [BS](/source/Bachelor_of_Science) in Mathematics in 1967. She was awarded a [Kennedy Scholarship](/source/Kennedy_Scholarship) to study at [MIT](/source/MIT), where she earned an [MS](/source/Master_of_Science) in 1970. She completed her [doctorate](/source/doctorate) in 1972 from [Princeton University](/source/Princeton_University) under the supervision of [Louis Norberg Howard](/source/Louis_Norberg_Howard).<ref name="cv"/><ref>{{mathgenealogy|name=Susan Jean Friedlander|id=14073}}</ref>

From 1972–1974, Friedlander was a Visiting Member at the [Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences](/source/Courant_Institute_of_Mathematical_Sciences), followed by a year as an instructor at Princeton University. In 1975, she joined the faculty in the Mathematics department at the [University of Illinois at Chicago](/source/University_of_Illinois-Chicago). In 2007, she moved to the [University of Southern California](/source/University_of_Southern_California) where she is Professor of Mathematics and the Director of the Center for Applied Mathematical Sciences.

==Service==
From 1996–2010, Friedlander served as an officer of the [American Mathematical Society](/source/American_Mathematical_Society) in the role of Associate Secretary.
