Cooper was originally a theatre major. Cooper received her undergraduate degree from [Colby College](/source/Colby_College) in 1971. She received her PhD from [Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory](/source/Lawrence_Berkeley_National_Laboratory) in 1980, where her doctoral advisor was [William Chinowsky](/source/William_Chinowsky)<ref name=":0">{{Cite web|title=Susan Catherine Cooper|url=https://inspirehep.net/authors/1013073|access-date=2020-10-28|website=inspirehep.net}}</ref> and her thesis was titled ''Jets in e<sup>+</sup>e<sup>−</sup> Annihilation''. == Career ==
Cooper held [postdoctoral](/source/Postdoctoral_researcher) positions at [DESY](/source/DESY) from 1980 to 1982 and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory from 1982 to 1986, including spokesman of Crystal Ball experiment. She was on the faculty at the [Massachusetts Institute of Technology](/source/Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology) from 1986 to 1989,  starting in near-IR astronomy to look for brown dwarfs as dark matter and was on the staff of the [Max Planck Institute](/source/List_of_Max_Planck_Institutes) in Munich from 1989 to 1996, including founder and spokesman of the CRESST experiment to search for WIMP dark matter.<ref name=":0" /> In the 1990s, Cooper was a leader of the [CRESST](/source/Cryogenic_Rare_Event_Search_with_Superconducting_Thermometers) (Cryogenic Rare Event Search with Superconducting Thermometers) experiment based at the [Gran Sasso National Laboratory](/source/Gran_Sasso_National_Laboratory), which is an experiment seeking to detect [dark matter](/source/dark_matter).<ref>{{Cite journal|last=Andrew|first=Watson|date=1997-03-21|title=To Catch a WIMP|url=https://science.sciencemag.org/content/275/5307/news-summaries|journal=Science|language=en|volume=275|issue=5307|pages=1736|doi=10.1126/science.275.5307.1736 |s2cid=118669650 |issn=0036-8075|url-access=subscription}}</ref> Cooper was deputy head of [particle physics](/source/particle_physics) from 2004 to 2015 and associate chairman of physics at Oxford from 2004 to 2014.
