**Susan Carlson** (born November 24, 1969)[1] is an American former [broadcast journalist](/source/Broadcast_journalist) and [news anchor](/source/News_anchor).

## Early life and education

Susan Carlson was born in November 1969[1] and grew up in [Dolton](/source/Dolton,_Illinois), [Illinois](/source/Illinois).[2] She attended Seton Academy in [South Holland, Illinois](/source/South_Holland,_Illinois), before earning a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) degree in journalism from [Loyola University Chicago](/source/Loyola_University_Chicago), where she graduated [magna cum laude](/source/Latin_honors).[2] She received a Master of Arts degree in journalism from [Roosevelt University](/source/Roosevelt_University).[3]

## Career

Carlson began her career as a radio reporter and morning show anchor for [WXLC](/source/WXLC) and [WKRS](/source/WKRS). She later became the [news director](/source/News_director) of [Shadow Traffic](/source/Shadow_Traffic) and broadcast news and traffic reports for [WTMX](/source/WTMX), [WILV](/source/WILV), [WJMK](/source/WJMK_(FM)), and [WSCR](/source/WSCR). She became a television traffic reporter for [WGN-TV](/source/WGN-TV) in [Chicago](/source/Chicago) in 1995 and worked there until 2002, when she took a job with [WBBM-TV](/source/WBBM-TV), eventually becoming co-anchor of the morning news.[4]

Carlson left WBBM in 2013 and took a position with [WMAQ-TV](/source/WMAQ-TV), becoming an anchor for that station in 2014. She left WMAQ in 2020 and announced plans to become an [audiobook](/source/Audiobook) [narrator](/source/Narration) and [voiceover artist](/source/Voice_acting).[4]

Carlson has received five local Emmy Awards (two for her work as a traffic reporter and three for her coverage of the [Chicago Marathon](/source/Chicago_Marathon)), an Edward R. Murrow Award for "Best News Feature," and the Chicagoland Achievement in Radio Award for "Best News Reporter."[5] In 2001, she was a media witness at the execution of [Timothy McVeigh](/source/Timothy_McVeigh).[5]

## Personal life

Carlson is divorced.[6] In 2015, she adopted a 4-year-old girl from India.[7]
