## Biography

Landau and her twin brother, Paul, were born in [Brooklyn](/source/Brooklyn), New York, to [Sidney Landau](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sidney_Landau&action=edit&redlink=1), a [studio executive](/source/Studio_executive) at [United Artists](/source/United_Artists), and Bea Landau.[1][2] She attended [Springfield Gardens High School](/source/Springfield_Gardens_High_School) in [Queens](/source/Queens), New York, and received a [bachelor's degree](/source/Bachelor's_degree) political science from [Brandeis University](/source/Brandeis_University) in 1974.[2]

She [executive produced](/source/Executive_producer) 1983's *[Tiger Town](/source/Tiger_Town)*, the first television film produced by the [Disney Channel](/source/Disney_Channel), which won a 1984 [CableACE Award](/source/CableACE_Award) for Best Dramatic Film, as well as the *[Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color: Young Harry Houdini](/source/Walt_Disney's_Wonderful_World_of_Color)* in 1987, which earned her a [Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Children's Program](/source/Primetime_Emmy_Award_for_Outstanding_Children's_Program).[1][2][3]

Landau was best known for producing the 1993 comedic film, *[Cool Runnings](/source/Cool_Runnings)*, which was loosely based on the [Jamaica national bobsleigh team](/source/Jamaica_national_bobsleigh_team)'s [1988 Winter Olympics](/source/1988_Winter_Olympics) debut. Her other film production credits included *[Mr. Destiny](/source/Mr._Destiny)* in 1990, the 1999 documentary *[Get Bruce](/source/Get_Bruce)*, *[An Ideal Husband](/source/An_Ideal_Husband_(1999_film))* in 1999, and *[All Over the Guy](/source/All_Over_the_Guy)* in 2001.[1] She teamed with actress [Mary Tyler Moore](/source/Mary_Tyler_Moore) to co-executive produce the 2000 television film, *[Mary and Rhoda](/source/Mary_and_Rhoda)*, based on the 1970s sitcom, *[The Mary Tyler Moore Show](/source/The_Mary_Tyler_Moore_Show)*.

In the [1992 California race](/source/United_States_Senate_election_in_California%2C_1992) for [U.S. Senate](/source/U.S._Senate), Landau fundraised on behalf of Senate candidate [Barbara Boxer](/source/Barbara_Boxer), a Democrat.[2] Boxer, who won the 1992 Senate election, credited Landau with boosting her campaign and her political career, telling an interviewer in 2017, "Susan Landau was a one-of-a-kind and I honestly believe that without her energetic support, I never would have been elected to the Senate in 1992."[2][3]

Additionally, Landau also worked as a [talent manager](/source/Talent_manager) representing others within the entertainment industry, including screenwriter [Simon Beaufoy](/source/Simon_Beaufoy) (writer of *[Slumdog Millionaire](/source/Slumdog_Millionaire)*, *[Salmon Fishing in the Yemen](/source/Salmon_Fishing_in_the_Yemen)*, and *[The Hunger Games: Catching Fire](/source/The_Hunger_Games%3A_Catching_Fire)*); actor [Dan Bucatinsky](/source/Dan_Bucatinsky) (*[Scandal](/source/Scandal_(TV_series))*); director [Stephen Surjik](/source/Stephen_Surjik) (*[Wayne's World 2](/source/Wayne's_World_2)*), whom she represented for 21 years; and producer [Christopher Hollier](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Christopher_Hollier&action=edit&redlink=1) (*[The Originals](/source/The_Originals_(TV_series))*).[1][2][3] According to Beaufoy, he and Landau spoke almost daily for 25 years.[2] Hollier praised her abilities as a manager, "there's never been someone more talented at bringing talent out in others. Director, producer, writer – no one could have a better friend in this town."[2]

Landau transitioned to photography beginning in 2007.[2] Her subjects included the [Stand Up to Cancer](/source/Stand_Up_to_Cancer) [telethon](/source/Telethon), which had been co-founded by her friend, the late film producer [Laura Ziskin](/source/Laura_Ziskin). The two had been friends since their work on the set of the 1978 film, *[Eyes of Laura Mars](/source/Eyes_of_Laura_Mars)* and Landau later published "Laura Ziskin: Collective Memories & Photographs."[2] Her other subjects included the cast and crew of [Showtime's](/source/Showtime_(TV_network)) *[Web Therapy](/source/Web_Therapy_(TV_series))*, as well as the producers of five [Academy Awards](/source/Academy_Awards) shows.[2] In 2017, Landau published another photo collection, "The [Brown Bears](/source/Brown_bear) of [Alaska](/source/Alaska)."[2]

Landau died following a brief illness at [Cedars-Sinai Medical Center](/source/Cedars-Sinai_Medical_Center) in Los Angeles on May 31, 2017, at the age of 65.[1][2] She was survived by her older brothers, Arthur and Avraham, her twin brother, Paul, and four nieces.[1][2]
