In addition, Surefire produces [knives](/source/Knife), [sound suppressors](/source/Sound_suppressors), [earplugs](/source/Earplugs), [Picatinny Rails](/source/Picatinny_rail), [magazines](/source/Magazine_(firearms)), and [batteries](/source/Electric_battery).[4] The company is a major supplier of flashlights, weapon lights, and lasers to the [U.S. Armed Forces](/source/Military_of_the_United_States) and its allies, especially for elite [special operations](/source/Special_operations) groups such as the [Navy SEALs](/source/United_States_Navy_SEALs) and [Delta Force](/source/Delta_Force). Surefire products are widely used in the U.S. by [law enforcement agencies](/source/Law_Enforcement_Agencies) and [SWAT](/source/SWAT) teams.

## History

John Matthews founded the [Newport Corporation](/source/Newport_Corporation_(company)) in 1969, which specialized in industrial lasers and [photonics](/source/Photonics).[5] After Matthews developed a [laser sight](/source/Laser_sight), he, Peter Hauk, and Ed Reynolds founded the [spin-off](/source/Corporate_spin-off) company, **Laser Products Corporation** on October 17, 1979.[3] In 1984, the company supplied the [Los Angeles Police Department](/source/Los_Angeles_Police_Department) and [Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department](/source/Los_Angeles_County_Sheriff's_Department) with shotgun laser sights for use during the [1984 Summer Olympics](/source/1984_Summer_Olympics). In the same year, the company also supplied and supported production of the film *[The Terminator](/source/The_Terminator)*, where it provided the laser sight used by [Arnold Schwarzenegger](/source/Arnold_Schwarzenegger) and is listed in the end credits. Laser Products developed its first "SureFire" branded product — a handgun mounted light in 1985. Laser Products Corporation became **SureFire, LLC** in 2000.[3] More recently, SureFire attained [ISO9001:2000](/source/ISO9001%3A2000) certification in 2008.[6]

## Products

### Flashlights

Surefire produces flashlights of widely varying sizes and power outputs from single-cell lights to large 20-cell [HID](/source/High-intensity_discharge_lamp) models.[7] Most of its flashlights are powered by primary [lithium](/source/Lithium) [CR123A](/source/List_of_battery_sizes#CR123A) [batteries](/source/Battery_(electricity)) that allow for compact size and low weight while offering high power output. These batteries offer a long shelf-life, but are more costly than zinc-based cells. Several flashlights are available with rechargeable battery packs. In 2010, Surefire released the E2L AA, designed to operate on [AA batteries](/source/AA_batteries), as does the Minimus™ AA headlamp.[8] Surefire sells rechargeable "LFP123A" [lithium ion](/source/Lithium_iron_phosphate_battery) batteries for all LED flashlights as a replacement for CR123A. Surefire also produces military weapon lights for mounting on handguns, rifles, sub-machine guns and shotguns. Surefire's Z2 CombatLight is standard issue to the [FBI](/source/Federal_Bureau_of_Investigation) and the [Federal Air Marshal Service](/source/Federal_Air_Marshal_Service),[9] and their various handheld lights are a frequent choice of police, military, fire, and [EMS](/source/Emergency_medical_services) personnel. Some models of handheld flashlights include an integrated "strike bezel" for use as a self-defense weapon. All of Surefire's flashlights are manufactured in the United States, although components such as LEDs are sometimes sourced overseas.

Most Surefire flashlight models are made of [anodized](/source/Anodized) [aluminum](/source/Aluminum) alloy in various colors, while a few models are made of Nitrolon, a proprietary glass-filled [polyamide](/source/Polyamide) [nylon](/source/Nylon) polymer.[10] All flashlights are weatherproof[*[clarification needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Please_clarify)*] and have various accessories, including red (night), blue (blood trail), green (reading maps/charts) and infrared (night vision compatible) filters, beam diffusers, beam covers, [lanyards](/source/Lanyard), pouches/holsters and spare battery/bulb carriers. Some models use [incandescent bulbs](/source/Incandescent_light_bulb), while most others use [LEDs](/source/Light-emitting_diode) with electronically controlled power regulation and adjustable brightness. The company used [Seoul Semiconductor](/source/Seoul_Semiconductor) and [Cree](/source/Cree_Inc.) XR-E LEDs in flashlights introduced in 2007.[11][12] More recently, flashlights with a [strobe](/source/Strobe) function, used for signalling or to disorientate were introduced.[13]

A more notable product is the SureFire M6 Guardian, a flashlight with a 250 or 500 [lumen](/source/Lumen_(unit)) beam from a [xenon](/source/Xenon) [bulb](/source/Incandescent_light_bulb).[14] Fifteen M6 flashlights were used to illuminate [Stonehenge](/source/Stonehenge) for the June 2008 cover photo of *[National Geographic](/source/National_Geographic)* magazine.[15] The *[New York Times](/source/New_York_Times)* referred to the M6 as being of the "design school that might be called Modern Militant, the most familiar example of which is the [Hummer](/source/Hummer)."[16] This was later used in SureFire's 2007 product catalogue.[17]
