The **Surduc Pass** (in Romanian: *Defileul Jiului* or *Pasul Surduc*, in Hungarian *Szurdok-szoros*) is a [mountain pass](/source/Mountain_pass) in the [Gorj](/source/Gorj_County) and [Hunedoara](/source/Hunedoara_County) counties of Southwestern Romania, connecting the [Petroșani Depression](/source/Petro%C8%99ani_Depression) with [Oltenia](/source/Oltenia).[1]

In Surduc Pass, the [Jiu River](/source/Jiu_(river)) divides two mountain ranges that belong to the [Southern Carpathians](/source/Southern_Carpathians): the [Vâlcan Mountains](/source/V%C3%A2lcan_Mountains) to the west and the [Parâng Mountains](/source/Par%C3%A2ng_Mountains) to the east.

In 1947, a road ([national road](/source/Roads_in_Romania) [DN66](/source/DN66), part of the [E-road](/source/International_E-road_network) [E79](/source/European_route_E79)) and a railway line were opened that connect [Transylvania](/source/Transylvania) with [Wallachia](/source/Wallachia) (the two other passes in the region are in the [Timiș-Cerna Gap](/source/Timi%C8%99-Cerna_Gap) and the [Turnu Roșu Pass](/source/Turnu_Ro%C8%99u_Pass)). In August 2005, a [national park](/source/National_park) with an area of 110 km2 (42 sq mi) was created in this pass.

The Romanian name of the pass derives from the Hungarian word "szurdok", which means "defile" or "canyon".
