# Suplee, Oregon

**Suplee** is an [unincorporated](/source/Unincorporated_area) historic community in eastern [Crook County](/source/Crook_County,_Oregon), [Oregon](/source/Oregon), United States.[1] It was located about 18 miles (29 km) east of [Paulina](/source/Paulina,_Oregon), near the Crook-[Grant](/source/Grant_County,_Oregon) county line.[2][3] The Suplee area was settled by people of French and [Métis](/source/M%C3%A9tis#Métis_people_in_the_United_States) descent from the [French Prairie](/source/French_Prairie) area in [Marion County](/source/Marion_County,_Oregon), including the great-granddaughter of [Étienne Lucier](/source/%C3%89tienne_Lucier).[4]

When Suplee post office was established in 1894, resident Charles Dorling suggested the name "[Suplee](/source/Suplee)," his mother's maiden name.[5] Originally in Grant County, the office was moved 3 miles (4.8 km) west to Crook County in 1902.[3] The post office ran intermittently, closing for good in 1943, with mail to Paulina.[3][5]

As of 1972, author [Ralph Friedman](/source/Ralph_Friedman) said there was nothing left at the old townsite, although there were still a few ranch buildings in the area.[6]

At one time there was a Suplee School ([44.0244°N 119.6665°W](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=44.0244_-119.6665)). Suplee (DeLore) Cemetery is listed by the [Oregon Parks and Recreation Department](/source/Oregon_Parks_and_Recreation_Department) as a historic cemetery.[7][8]

The area is known for having the oldest [sedimentary rocks](/source/Sedimentary_rock) in the state.[9] The geologic area of the [Suplee Formation](/source/Suplee_Formation) is often referred to as the Suplee-[Izee](/source/Izee,_Oregon) area.[10]
