It consist of vocalist/noise artist Lex Santiago, guitarists Christopher Eustaquio and Rob Gonzalez, drummer Alex Dobrowolski, and bassist Ross Bradley. They have released two projects on [Prosthetic Records](/source/Prosthetic_Records), *The Unfailing Rope* (2023) and the EP *Passages* (2025).

## History

### Formation and *Sunnata* (2013–2021)

Sunrot was formed in 2013 in the [North Jersey](/source/North_Jersey) region of [New Jersey](/source/New_Jersey). Vocalist Lex Santiago, having moved back to the state after undergoing [drug rehabilitation](/source/Drug_rehabilitation) in [Florida](/source/Florida), recruited drummer Rob Gonzalez and guitarist Christopher Eustaquio after seeing them in local bands Furnace Head and Thera Roya.[1] Across 2015 and 2016, they played shows with [U.S. Christmas](/source/U.S._Christmas),[2] [Cavity](/source/Cavity_(band)),[3][4] [Grief](/source/Grief_(band)),[5] and [Full of Hell](/source/Full_of_Hell_(band)).[6][7] Early in their career, they reportedly opened for [Listener](/source/Listener_(band)) and [Birds in Row](/source/Birds_in_Row).[8]

They released their first full-length album, *Sunnata*, on August 3, 2017, premiered via [*Vice*](/source/Vice_(magazine))'s *Noisey* website.[9] The album's first-day sales were contributed to a [Bandcamp](/source/Bandcamp) donation drive for the [Transgender Law Center](/source/Transgender_Law_Center).[9] That same month, they embarked on a summer tour with [Philadelphia](/source/Philadelphia) band God Root.[9] Following the release of *Sunnata*, the band added new drummer Alex Dobrowolski, while Gonzalez switched to guitar.[1]

In 2018, the band played a [Fourth of July](/source/Independence_Day_(United_States)) date with [Amenra](/source/Amenra) at [Saint Vitus](/source/Saint_Vitus_(venue)) on the latter's North American tour,[10][8] and in September, they performed alongside [Uniform](/source/Uniform_(band)) and [Thou](/source/Thou_(American_band)) at the [Knitting Factory](/source/Knitting_Factory) for the latter's [*Magus*](/source/Magus_(album)) album release party.[11]

Sunrot performed in February 2019 at Black Flags Over Brooklyn, an [anti-fascist](/source/Anti-fascism) [extreme metal](/source/Extreme_metal) festival organized by journalist [Kim Kelly](/source/Kim_Kelly_(journalist)), alongside bands including [Dawn Ray'd](/source/Dawn_Ray'd) and [Racetraitor](/source/Racetraitor).[12][13][14][15] They also contributed to Kelly's *Riffs for Reproductive Justice* compilation album, released the following July, which featured many of the same acts as well as [Emma Ruth Rundle](/source/Emma_Ruth_Rundle), [Svalbard](/source/Svalbard_(band)), and [Planning for Burial](/source/Planning_for_Burial) and benefited the [National Network of Abortion Funds](/source/National_Network_of_Abortion_Funds) and the Yellowhammer Fund.[16][17] That same month, they were included in [*Revolver*](/source/Revolver_(magazine))'s monthly "Artists You Need to Know" feature.[18] Later in the year, they opened shows for [City of Caterpillar](/source/City_of_Caterpillar)[19] and [Pig Destroyer](/source/Pig_Destroyer).[20]

### Signing to Prosthetic and *The Unfailing Rope* (2021–present)

The band released a [split album](/source/Split_album) with the punk band Ides in May 2021, on which they covered [Black Flag](/source/Black_Flag_(band))'s "Fix Me".[21] Around this time, the band added bassist Ross Bradley.[1] In February 2022, it was announced that Sunrot had signed to [Prosthetic Records](/source/Prosthetic_Records), and they released the single "21%" concurrent with the announcement.[22][23] In April, they appeared on a [Thou](/source/Thou_(American_band)) tribute album, *Heavier Than Thou*, benefiting House of Tulip, alongside Cloud Rat, Aseethe, Cowardice.[24] The following summer, they toured with [Vile Creature](/source/Vile_Creature), beginning with a show at [Saint Vitus](/source/Saint_Vitus_(venue)).[25]

In early 2023, the band performed with [Imperial Triumphant](/source/Imperial_Triumphant)[26] and appeared on [The HIRS Collective](/source/The_HIRS_Collective)'s album *We're Still Here.*[27] Both acts also joined Sunrot at the inaugural Subterranean Dissonance Fest, which also included [Liturgy](/source/Liturgy_(band)), [Horrendous](/source/Horrendous), [Thantifaxath](/source/Thantifaxath), [Pyrrhon](/source/Pyrrhon_(band)), [Umbra Vitae](/source/Umbra_Vitae), and [John Frum](/source/Liam_Wilson) among others.[28] On February 2, the band released the single "Gutter", featuring [Thou](/source/Thou_(American_band)) members Bryan Funck and Emily McWilliams, and announced an upcoming second album titled *The Unfailing Rope*.[29][30] The album also featured [Pig Destroyer](/source/Pig_Destroyer)'s Blake Harrison and was produced by Scot Moriarty and mastered by [Cult of Luna](/source/Cult_of_Luna)'s Magnus Lindberg.[29] The album's recording saw a number of setbacks, including Santiago being hospitalized due to a [psychotic](/source/Psychosis) episode.[31][1][32][33][34][35] The following month, they released a second single, "Patricide",[36] and the album itself was released on April 7 via Prosthetic.[37] Tom Morgan of [*Invisible Oranges*](/source/Invisible_Oranges) included *The Unfailing Rope* as an honorable mention on his list of the Top Albums of 2023.[38] In October, they performed at the Slower & Harder Fest alongside [Weedeater](/source/Weedeater_(band)), [Bongripper](/source/Bongripper), [Portrayal of Guilt](/source/Portrayal_of_Guilt), and [Dorthia Cottrell](/source/Dorthia_Cottrell).[39]

In May and June 2024, Sunrot played the inaugural [Toronto](/source/Toronto)-based Prepare The Ground festival, alongside [40 Watt Sun](/source/40_Watt_Sun), [KEN Mode](/source/KEN_Mode), [Mares of Thrace](/source/Mares_of_Thrace_(band)), [Marissa Nadler](/source/Marissa_Nadler), [Odonis Odonis](/source/Odonis_Odonis), [Body Void](/source/Body_Void), [Drowse](/source/Drowse), [Maggot Heart](/source/Maggot_Heart), [North of America](/source/North_of_America), [Orchid](/source/Orchid_(hardcore_punk_band)), and [Tomb Mold](/source/Tomb_Mold).[40][41][42] The following two months, they toured the [East Coast](/source/East_Coast_of_the_United_States) and [Midwest](/source/Midwestern_United_States) with [Ragana](/source/Ragana_(band)).[43][44]

The band released a new EP, *Passages*, on January 24, 2025, on Prosthetic. The EP features contributions from [Full of Hell](/source/Full_of_Hell_(band)) vocalist Dylan Walker, Cloud Rat drummer Brandon Hill, and a vocal sample from musician [Sun Ra](/source/Sun_Ra).[45][46][47] The following spring, they co-headlined a US tour with [The Body](/source/The_Body_(band)).[48][49] They also performed in June at Mutants of the Monster Festival in [Little Rock, Arkansas](/source/Little_Rock,_Arkansas), sharing a lineup with bands including [Rwake](/source/Rwake), [Pallbearer](/source/Pallbearer_(band)), The Body, [Royal Thunder](/source/Royal_Thunder), [The Atlas Moth](/source/The_Atlas_Moth), and [Exhorder](/source/Exhorder).[50]

## Musical style

Sunrot's music has been labeled [sludge metal](/source/Sludge_metal),[18][21][22][37][51][52][53] [doom metal](/source/Doom_metal),[1][35][51][54][55] [noise](/source/Noise_music),[51][56][37][54][57][33][31][34] [post-metal](/source/Post-metal),[18][54][6] and [grindcore](/source/Grindcore),[5] with elements of [harsh noise](/source/Harsh_noise),[9][51] [industrial](/source/Industrial_music),[9][34] [drone](/source/Drone_music),[6][9][34] [punk](/source/Punk_rock)/[hardcore](/source/Hardcore_punk),[6][52][56][37] and [black metal](/source/Black_metal).[29][37][43] Their sound has been compared to artists including [Neurosis](/source/Neurosis_(band)), [Amenra](/source/Amenra), [Swans](/source/Swans_(band)), [Eyehategod](/source/Eyehategod), [Sunn O)))](/source/Sunn_O)))), [Electric Wizard](/source/Electric_Wizard), [The Body](/source/The_Body_(band)), [Dragged into Sunlight](/source/Dragged_into_Sunlight), and [High on Fire](/source/High_on_Fire).[18][21][34][35] The website [CVLT Nation](/source/CVLT_Nation) has listed them alongside acts like [Thou](/source/Thou_(American_band)), [Primitive Man](/source/Primitive_Man_(band)), [Vile Creature](/source/Vile_Creature), [Dawn Ray'd](/source/Dawn_Ray'd), and [Body Void](/source/Body_Void) as part of a newer generation of metal bands.[55][35]

On the subject of influences, guitarist Christopher Eustaquio described their debut album *Sunnata* as "total Neurosis worship".[9] The members have expressed admiration for artists including [Kristin Hayter](/source/Kristin_Hayter), [Emma Ruth Rundle](/source/Emma_Ruth_Rundle), [King Woman](/source/Kristina_Esfandiari), Jenna Pup of [The HIRS Collective](/source/The_HIRS_Collective), [Dreamcrusher](/source/Dreamcrusher), King Vision Ultra of [PTP](/source/PTP_(artist_collective)), [Soul Glo](/source/Soul_Glo), [Moor Mother](/source/Moor_Mother), [Gel](/source/Gel_(band)), [Danzig](/source/Danzig_(band)), [Ill Niño](/source/Ill_Ni%C3%B1o), and [Discharge](/source/Discharge_(band)).[1] For *The Unfailing Rope*, they pointed to Indian's *From All Purity*, [Sleep](/source/Sleep_(band))'s [*The Sciences*](/source/The_Sciences_(album)), Rundle's [*Engine of Hell*](/source/Engine_of_Hell), and Amenra's *Mass VI* as inspirations.[57][35]

The band's lyrics often address dark themes such as [depression](/source/Depression_(mood)), [psychosis](/source/Psychosis), [suicide](/source/Suicide), [trauma](/source/Psychological_trauma), [grief](/source/Grief), [bigotry](/source/Prejudice), [toxic masculinity](/source/Toxic_masculinity), [colonialism](/source/Colonialism), and [ecocide](/source/Ecocide), albeit with a sense of humor and an [optimistic](/source/Optimism) outlook.[35][34][31][22] Bassist Ross Bradley described *The Unfailing Rope* as being broadly about "hurt and healing in one way or another. Healing from [childhood trauma](/source/Childhood_trauma), [mental health](/source/Mental_health) crises, the trauma of colonialism and extractive [capitalism](/source/Capitalism). The way we tend to write is to hold a mirror up to some really ugly truth in ourselves or our world and try to explore a way out. I think that hurt and that hope is present in the music and lyrics of basically every song on here."[1]
