Wilson, Jr.](/source/Richard_Thornton_Wilson%2C_Jr.)

## Background

Sunfire was sired by Wilson's [Olambala](/source/Olambala), a multiple winner of important races including the [Latonia Derby](/source/Latonia_Derby) and [Suburban Handicap](/source/Suburban_Handicap) and sire of several top runners including the 1916 [American Champion Two-Year-Old Colt](/source/American_Champion_Two-Year-Old_Colt) [Campfire](/source/Campfire_(horse)), and [Belmont](/source/Belmont_Stakes) and [Preakness Stakes](/source/Preakness_Stakes) winner [Pillory](/source/Pillory_(horse)).

## Racing career

Sunfire was conditioned for racing by future [U.S. Racing Hall of Fame](/source/National_Museum_of_Racing_and_Hall_of_Fame) [trainer](/source/Horse_trainer) [T. J. Healey](/source/T._J._Healey). In 1928, he won the [Toronto Cup Handicap](/source/Toronto_Cup_Stakes) at [Old Woodbine Racetrack](/source/Old_Woodbine_Racetrack) in [Toronto, Ontario](/source/Toronto%2C_Ontario), [Canada](/source/Canada) and the [Ohio Derby](/source/Ohio_Derby), held at Bainbridge Park Race Track near [Cleveland Ohio](/source/Cleveland_Ohio).[1] In winning the Ohio Derby under [jockey](/source/Jockey) Roger Leonard, Sunfire set a new Bainbridge Park Race Track course record of 1:52 1/5 for a mile and a furlong.[2]

At [Blue Bonnets Raceway](/source/Blue_Bonnets_Raceway) in Montreal Sunfire won the eighteenth edition of the [Windsor Hotel Cup Handicap](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Windsor_Hotel_Cup_Handicap&action=edit&redlink=1). A race open to horses age three and older, Sunfire was the only three-year-old in a field of seven runners.[3]

Raced again at age four, back in Toronto Sunfire won his second straight Toronto Cup Handicap and ran second to [Preakness Stakes](/source/Preakness_Stakes) runner-up [Sir Harry](/source/Sir_Harry) in the 1929 [King Edward Gold Cup Handicap](/source/King_Edward_Stakes).[1]
