Newspaper in South Carolina

## History

H. L. Darr was a journalist in [Charleston, South Carolina](/source/Charleston%2C_South_Carolina), who moved to Sumter to establish a weekly paper.[1] [Noah Graham Osteen](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Noah_Graham_Osteen&action=edit&redlink=1) (born January 25, 1843) joined the paper soon after.[2] [Frank Moses](/source/Frank_Moses) worked for it. It competed against the *[Sumter Watchman](/source/Sumter_Watchman)*.[1]

A conservative paper, it promoted [Democratic Party](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)) politics and described itself as a white man's paper[3] with an editorial header stating "This is a white man's country and must be ruled by white men". Moses wrote columns and editorials calling for the development of industry in the South, criticizing "[carpetbaggers](/source/Carpetbagger)", Northern missionaries helping establish [Union Leagues](/source/Union_League), and Republican activities, especially [Radical Republican](/source/Radical_Republican), in Washington D.C.[1][4]

The paper used the [telegraph](/source/Telegraph) to get [Associated Press](/source/Associated_Press) stories on U.S. President [Andrew Johnson](/source/Andrew_Johnson)'s fight against the [Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution](/source/Fourteenth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution) and impeachment.[1] The paper was renamed the *True Southron*. It eventually merged with the Watchman to become the *Watchman and Southron*.[2]

Osteen developed the business into a publishing company. His son Hubert established *[The Item](/source/The_Item)* in Sumter.
