**Summercon** is one of the oldest [hacker](/source/Hacker_(computer_security)) [conventions](/source/Convention_(meeting)), and America's oldest and longest-running [information security](/source/Information_security) conference. It helped set a precedent for more modern "cons" such as [H.O.P.E.](/source/Hackers_on_Planet_Earth) and [DEF CON](/source/DEF_CON_(convention)), although it has remained smaller and more personal.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] Summercon has been hosted in cities such as [Pittsburgh](/source/Pittsburgh), [St. Louis](/source/St._Louis), [Atlanta](/source/Atlanta), [Washington, D.C.](/source/Washington%2C_D.C.), [New York City](/source/New_York_City), [Austin](/source/Austin%2C_Texas), [Las Vegas](/source/Las_Vegas), and [Amsterdam](/source/Amsterdam). Originally run by *[Phrack](/source/Phrack)*, the underground ezine, and held annually in St. Louis, the organizational responsibilities of running Summercon were transferred to [clovis](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Clovis_(computer_security)&action=edit&redlink=1) in 1998 and the convention took place in Atlanta, dubbed 'Summercon X'.

In its modern incarnation, it is currently organized by [redpantz(Chris Valasek)](/source/Chris_Valasek) and [shmeck](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Shmeck&action=edit&redlink=1), who emphasize the importance of [face-to-face interaction](/source/Face-to-face_interaction) as technology increasingly mediates relationships between members of the information security community. Summercon is open to everyone, including "hackers, [phreakers](/source/Phreaking), phrackers, feds, [2600](/source/2600_The_Hacker_Quarterly) kids, cops, security professionals, U4EA, r00t kids club, press, groupies, chicks, conference whores, k0d3 kids, convicted felons, and concerned parents."[1]
