# Sumallo River

The '''Sumallo River''' is located in southern [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia), in the [Cascade Mountains](/source/Cascade_Mountains) to the east of [Hope](/source/Hope%2C_British_Columbia).<ref>{{BCGNIS|8825|Sumallo River}}</ref>  It begins on the east slopes of [Mount Payne](/source/Mount_Payne),<ref>{{BCGNIS|38611|Mount Payne}}</ref> south of the village of  [Sunshine Valley](/source/Sunshine_Valley%2C_British_Columbia).  It flows north until it reaches Sunshine Valley where it turns southeast and proceeds into [Manning Park](/source/Manning_Park).  It continues southeast within the park, running alongside [Highway 3](/source/Crowsnest_Highway) before eventually meeting the [Skagit River](/source/Skagit_River) at the northern boundary of [Skagit Valley Provincial Park](/source/Skagit_Valley_Provincial_Park), to the northeast of Marmot Mountain.

The name comes from the word ''Semall-á-ow'' given to [Alexander Caulfield Anderson](/source/Alexander_Caulfield_Anderson) by his [Nlaka'pamux](/source/Nlaka'pamux) guide on an 1846 journey through the [North Cascades](/source/North_Cascades).
