The parish of *Suledal* (later spelled *Suldal*) was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see [formannskapsdistrikt](/source/Formannskapsdistrikt) law). In 1842, Suledal Municipality was divided into two: the northern district (population: 1,584) became the new [Søvde Municipality](/source/S%C3%B8vde_Municipality) and the southern district (population: 2,030) remained as a smaller Suledal Municipality.[7]

During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the [Schei Committee](/source/Schei_Committee). On 1 January 1965, the following areas were merged to form a new, larger Suldal Municipality:[7]

- all of Suldal Municipality (population: 1,412)

- all of [Sand Municipality](/source/Sand_Municipality) (population: 1,135)

- all of [Erfjord Municipality](/source/Erfjord_Municipality) (population: 610)

- most of [Jelsa Municipality](/source/Jelsa_Municipality) (population: 928), except for the areas of Jelsa located on the island of [Ombo](/source/Ombo) which became part of [Finnøy Municipality](/source/Finn%C3%B8y_Municipality) and [Hjelmeland Municipality](/source/Hjelmeland_Municipality)

- the part of [Imsland Municipality](/source/Imsland_Municipality) that was located south of the [Vindafjorden](/source/Vindafjorden) (population: 61)

On 1 January 1978, the parts of [Vindafjord Municipality](/source/Vindafjord_Municipality) located southeast of the [Vindafjorden](/source/Vindafjorden) on the *Ropeid* peninsula (population: 13) was transferred to Suldal.[7]

### Name

The municipality (originally the [parish](/source/Prestegjeld)) is named after the Suledalen valley ([Old Norse](/source/Old_Norse_language): *Súladalr*) since it was a central geographical feature of the municipality. The first element is the plural [genitive case](/source/Genitive_case) of *[súla](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/s%C3%BAla#Old_Norse)* which means "pillar" or "column" (likely referring to the mountain pass [Suldalsporten](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Suldalsporten&action=edit&redlink=1)). The last element is *[dalr](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/dalr#Old_Norse)* which means "[valley](/source/Valley)" or "dale". Before 1891, the name was written *"Suledal"*.[8]

### Coat of arms

The [coat of arms](/source/Coat_of_arms) was granted on 11 March 1976. The official [blazon](/source/Blazon) is *"[Gules](/source/Gules), three [bendlets](/source/Bend_(heraldry)) wavy [Or](/source/Or_(heraldry))"* ([Norwegian](/source/Norwegian_language): *I raudt ein gull bølgjeforma trillingstreng, skråstilt høgre venstre*). This means the arms have a red [field](/source/Field_(heraldry)) (background) and the [charge](/source/Charge_(heraldry)) is a set of the three diagonal wavy lins. The charge has a [tincture](/source/Tincture_(heraldry)) of [Or](/source/Or_(heraldry)) which means it is commonly colored yellow, but if it is made out of metal, then gold is used. The lines represent the local river [Suldalslågen](/source/Suldalsl%C3%A5gen) which runs through the municipality. The arms were designed by Magnus Hardeland. The municipal flag has the same design as the coat of arms.[9][10][11]

### Churches

The [Church of Norway](/source/Church_of_Norway) has four parishes (*sokn*) within Suldal Municipality. It is part of the [Ryfylke prosti](/source/Ryfylke_prosti) ([deanery](/source/Deanery)) in the [Diocese of Stavanger](/source/Diocese_of_Stavanger).

## History

View of rural Suldal

View of the Suldal valley (with Sand village at the top)

The area that is now Suldal Municipality has a long history of trade connections to the nearby valley regions to the north and east. The main mountain plateau trade route led east from Suldal municipality over the plateau to the nearby [Setesdal](/source/Setesdal) valley in [Bykle](/source/Bykle_Municipality) in [Agder](/source/Agder) county. Another route led north from Suldal in Rogaland county through the [Røldal](/source/R%C3%B8ldal) area in [Vestland](/source/Vestland) county, and then east into [Vinje](/source/Vinje_Municipality) in [Telemark](/source/Telemark) county. There has also been found Viking artefacts and graves in Suldal.

The [Ulla-Førre](/source/Ulla-F%C3%B8rre) project of building huge hydroelectric dams in the mountains was initiated in the 1960s. At times, the project employed over a thousand people. The finished hydroelectric complex has a total capacity of approximately 2,100 megawatts (2,800,000 hp) and produces about 4.8 [terawatt-hours](/source/Kilowatt-hour) (17 [PJ](/source/Joule)) yearly.
