'''''Successor''''' is an [EP](/source/Extended_play) by [Sonata Arctica](/source/Sonata_Arctica), released through [Spinefarm Records](/source/Spinefarm_Records) on 7 August 2000.

==Recording==
Successor comprises some live versions of [Sonata Arctica](/source/Sonata_Arctica)'s songs, an edited version of the song "FullMoon" from the full length [album](/source/album) ''[Ecliptica](/source/Ecliptica)'', two new songs and two [cover songs](/source/cover_version) from [German](/source/Germany) bands.

The cover songs, which also appear in the ''[Takatalvi](/source/Takatalvi)'' EP, are:
*"[Still Loving You](/source/Still_Loving_You)", originally recorded by the [Scorpions](/source/Scorpions_(band)) in their [LP](/source/Long_play) [Love at First Sting](/source/Love_at_First_Sting) (1984).
*"[I Want Out](/source/I_Want_Out_(Helloween_song))", originally recorded by the [power metal](/source/power_metal) band [Helloween](/source/Helloween) in the 1988 album ''[Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part II](/source/Keeper_of_the_Seven_Keys%3A_Part_II)''.

The two songs composed for the album are the acoustic [ballad](/source/ballad_(music)) "Shy" (originally an upbeat hard rock [demo](/source/demo_(music)) song from when the band were still called Tricky Means) and "San Sebastian", that was re-released on the 2001 album ''[Silence](/source/Silence_(Sonata_Arctica_album))'' (this song was to be released in Ecliptica, but the band chose to release it on this EP).

Live tracks were performed on 16 June 2000 at [Provinssirock](/source/Provinssirock) festival, [Seinäjoki](/source/Sein%C3%A4joki), [Finland](/source/Finland).

==Critical reception==
''{{ill|Powermetal.de|de|Powermetal.de}}'' called the cover songs the definitive highlight of the EP. The two new songs were noted as terrible and the rest of the EP was called unspectacular.<ref name="Powermetal.de">{{cite web |last1=Debes |first1=Christian |title=Review - SONATA ARCTICA - Successor |url=https://powermetal.de/review/review-Sonata_Arctica/Successor,267.html |website={{ill|Powermetal.de|de|Powermetal.de}} |access-date=15 June 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20091012005638/https://powermetal.de/review/review-Sonata_Arctica/Successor,267.html |archive-date=12 October 2009 |language=German |date=7 October 2000 |url-status=live}}</ref> ''{{ill|Vampster|de|Vampster}}'' noted the Scorpions cover as extraordinary but Helloween cover was said to lack the energy of the original. "San Sebastian" was called average, while "Shy" was called a great ballad. The two live tracks were noted as great, especially "My Land".<ref name="Vampster">{{cite web |author1=Fierce |title=Reviews - SONATA ARCTICA: Successor [EP] |url=https://vampster.com/cd-reviews/sonata-arctica-successor/ |website={{ill|Vampster|de|Vampster}} |access-date=15 June 2025 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210119051429/https://vampster.com/cd-reviews/sonata-arctica-successor/ |archive-date=19 January 2021 |language=German |date=27 October 2000 |url-status=live}}</ref>
