== Composition ==
''Substatic'' is known to be one of Jefferies' most experimental and musically adventurous recordings. The album comprises five pieces of music, including a lengthy seventeen-minute suite titled "Three Movements". The compositions are based around repetitious rhythms created by Jefferies' pianodrum, a combination of a keyboard and the [snare](/source/Snare_drum) and [bass drum](/source/bass_drum) sections of a drum set, and are partially improvised.<ref name="radiointerview">{{cite web |url=http://www.reocities.com/zaaz813/jefferies.html |title=Electricity: Peter Jefferies on Peter Jefferies |publisher=reocities.com |date=February 1998 |accessdate=October 25, 2012}}</ref>

The use of [sampling](/source/Sampling_(music)) is prominently used as part of the composition of ''Substatic''. The piece "Index" includes sampled vocals of Jean Smith of [Mecca Normal](/source/Mecca_Normal), taken from a 1995 live performance.<ref name="allmusic"/> "Damage" features audience noise which was recorded by [Bruce Russell](/source/Bruce_Russell_(musician)) during a live performance.
