A [President's Scholar](/source/President's_Scholar) from [Raffles Institution](/source/Raffles_Institution) in 1966 and [Colombo Plan](/source/Colombo_Plan) Scholar, Su graduated with a [Bachelor of Science](/source/Bachelor_of_Science), [Master of Science](/source/Master_of_Science) and [Doctor of Philosophy](/source/Doctor_of_Philosophy) in [electrical engineering](/source/electrical_engineering) from the [University of Alberta](/source/University_of_Alberta), [California Institute of Technology](/source/California_Institute_of_Technology), and [Stanford University](/source/Stanford_University) respectively. He also holds a Master of Science in [statistics](/source/statistics) from Stanford University, and attended post-graduate programmes in [business administration](/source/business_administration) and [management development](/source/management_development) at the University of Singapore (now the [National University of Singapore](/source/National_University_of_Singapore)) and [Harvard Business School](/source/Harvard_Business_School) respectively.

==Career==
Su began his career in 1972 as one of the first research engineers in Singapore's [Ministry of Defence](/source/Ministry_of_Defence_(Singapore)) (MINDEF). He became Director of the [Defence Science Organisation](/source/Defence_Science_Organisation) (DSO) in 1986, building it into Singapore's largest research and development institute. In 1997, he transformed DSO into a not-for-profit company, DSO National Laboratories,<ref name="DSO National Laboratories">{{Cite web|title=DSO National Laboratories|url=http://www.dso.org.sg/aboutus.aspx|url-status=dead|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110612190931/http://www.dso.org.sg/aboutus.aspx|archivedate=12 June 2011}}</ref> and became its first chief executive officer. After serving as the deputy secretary (technology) in MINDEF for two years, he set up the [Defence Science and Technology Agency](/source/Defence_Science_and_Technology_Agency) (DSTA) and became its founding chief executive in 2000 until 2002. Su became an adjunct associate professor at the [National University of Singapore](/source/National_University_of_Singapore) (NUS)'s Department of Electrical Engineering in 1991 and taught [radar](/source/radar) systems and [signal processing](/source/signal_processing) there. He was promoted to adjunct professor in 1995. He also taught management of technology at the [NUS Business School](/source/NUS_Business_School) from 1998–2000.
