== Professional experience ==
Simpson first worked at [Arthur Andersen](/source/Arthur_Andersen) as a Chartered Accountant in Transaction Services and Corporate Recovery.<ref name="Stuart Simpson, CFO, Royal Mail">{{Cite web|date=2018-01-22|title=Stuart Simpson, CFO, Royal Mail|url=https://www.accountancyage.com/2018/01/22/stuart-simpson-cfo-royal-mail/|access-date=2020-09-01|website=Accountancy Age|language=en-GB}}</ref> The bulk of his subsequent experience before joining Royal Mail was in the automotive industry in the UK and internationally: working in roles focused in finance, operations, planning and strategy, he joined [Rolls-Royce & Bentley Motors](/source/Rolls-Royce_Motor_Cars) in 1994, [Vauxhall](/source/Vauxhall_Motors) in 1996 and [General Motors](/source/General_Motors) in 1998.<ref name=aa/> He then went to [Saab](/source/Saab_Automobile) in 2001,  returned to General Motors in 2003 and then moved to [e2v](/source/Teledyne_e2v) in 2008.<ref name=aa/>

Simpson has held various roles in Royal Mail prior to  appointment as interim CEO in 2020. Joining the company in 2009 as Finance Director for Group Operations, he held the Chief Finance Officer role for almost two years before becoming CEO.<ref name="Stuart Simpson, CFO, Royal Mail"/> He was replaced as CEO by [Simon Thompson](/source/Simon_Thompson_(Royal_Mail)) on 11 January 2021.<ref name=":0" />
