# Stuart Sharratt

**Stuart Edgar Sharratt** (born 26 February 1942) is an English former [football](/source/Association_football) [goalkeeper](/source/Goalkeeper_(association_football)) who made 152 league and cup appearances for [Port Vale](/source/Port_Vale_F.C.) between 1966 and 1972. He previously played for [West Bromwich Albion](/source/West_Bromwich_Albion_F.C.), [Nantwich Town](/source/Nantwich_Town_F.C.), and [Oswestry Town](/source/Oswestry_Town_F.C.).

## Career

Stuart played for Ball Haye Green and Padgate Teacher Training College before joining [West Bromwich Albion](/source/West_Bromwich_Albion_F.C.) as an amateur. He joined [Nantwich](/source/Nantwich_Town_F.C.) in August 1965[3] and moved on to [Oswestry Town](/source/Oswestry_Town_F.C.) before joining [Jackie Mudie](/source/Jackie_Mudie)'s [Port Vale](/source/Port_Vale_F.C.) for £2,000 in March 1966.[1] He was favoured ahead of the ageing [Jimmy O'Neill](/source/Jimmy_O'Neill_(footballer,_born_1931)) and the inexperienced [David Ikin](/source/David_Ikin), and played 15 [Fourth Division](/source/Football_League_Fourth_Division) games at the end of the [1965–66](/source/1965%E2%80%9366_Port_Vale_F.C._season) season.[1] He played 49 of the club's 50 games in the [1966–67](/source/1966%E2%80%9367_Port_Vale_F.C._season) campaign, beating off competition from young hopeful [Billy McNulty](/source/Billy_McNulty).[1] Sharrat was an ever-present during the 49 game [1967–68](/source/1967%E2%80%9368_Port_Vale_F.C._season) season.[1] In March 1968, [manager](/source/Manager_(association_football)) [Stanley Matthews](/source/Stanley_Matthews) arranged a £15,000 [transfer](/source/Transfer_(association_football)) to [Huddersfield Town](/source/Huddersfield_Town_A.F.C.), however, Sharratt refused the move.[4] However, injury struck on 14 August 1968 as he cracked a [kneecap](/source/Patella) in a 2–0 defeat at [Wrexham](/source/Wrexham_A.F.C.) in the first round of the [League Cup](/source/EFL_Cup), later contracting a [virus](/source/Virus) in his [blood](/source/Blood).[1] Upon his recovery he became a part-time player and barely got a game, though he did play instead of [Keith Ball](/source/Keith_Ball) in 18 [Third Division](/source/Football_League_Third_Division) games in the [1970–71](/source/1970%E2%80%9371_Port_Vale_F.C._season) season, and went on to feature 18 times in the [1971–72](/source/1971%E2%80%9372_Port_Vale_F.C._season) season.[1] His [contract](/source/Association_football_contracts) was terminated by manager [Gordon Lee](/source/Gordon_Lee_(footballer)) in May 1972 because he was unable to get released from his work as a college lecturer to play in a [testimonial match](/source/Testimonial_match).[1] He appealed and the club were forced by the [Football League](/source/English_Football_League) to honour his contract to 30 June 1972.[1]

## Post-retirement

Stuart has increasingly attended Vale matches as a supporter since 1986.[1] In 2015, he underwent surgery to treat a [brain tumor](/source/Brain_tumor).[5]
