# Stuart Paine

**Stuart Douglas Lansing Paine** (October 18, 1910[1] – March 13, 1961[2]) was an [Antarctic](/source/Antarctic) explorer.

## Life

Paine was born in [Durham, New Hampshire](/source/Durham,_New_Hampshire),[2] the son of [Ralph Delahaye Paine](/source/Ralph_Delahaye_Paine), author and journalist, and Katharine Lansing Morse.[1] His older brother, [Ralph Delahaye Paine, Jr.](/source/Ralph_Delahaye_Paine,_Jr.), was editor and publisher of *[Fortune](/source/Fortune_(magazine))* magazine and his twin brother was Philbrook Ten Eyck Paine.[1] Paine attended [Phillips Academy](/source/Phillips_Academy), graduating in 1929, and [Yale University](/source/Yale_University), graduating in 1933.[2] He joined the [United States Navy](/source/United_States_Navy) in 1939 and served as a naval [attaché](/source/Attach%C3%A9) in [Lima, Peru](/source/Lima,_Peru) prior to US involvement in [World War II](/source/World_War_II).[2]

He was on the second Antarctic expedition (1933–1935) of Admiral [Richard E. Byrd](/source/Richard_E._Byrd), in charge of the expedition's dog teams. The expedition traversed 1410 miles by [dog sled](/source/Dog_sled) in 88 days and came within 180 miles of the [South Pole](/source/South_Pole). He wrote a book about the expedition called *The Long Whip*, and his diaries of the expedition were transcribed, annotated by his daughter, Merlyn Paine, and published by the University of Missouri Press.[3] in 2007 as *Footsteps on the Ice*.[4] [Mount Paine](/source/Mount_Paine) in Antarctica, discovered in 1934 by the expedition, was named for him by Byrd. Byrd also named [Mount Durham](/source/Mount_Durham) after Paine's hometown.

Later in life, he was president of a number of [California](/source/California) manufacturing companies.[2]
